mv 8000 a few questions, + DIY vga/mouse expansion?

i guess what im asking is can you click in all your drum beats with just the mouse if you wanted?

the 349 mv 8000 just sold an hour before i called about it

i got them down to 850 on the mv8800 instead of 999. although i ended up paying around 930 in the end for taxes and shipping, although its better than paying taxes and shipping on top of 999!

im stoked, just gotta get a little vga monitor and mouse from the pawn shop or something and ill be set!

the guy said its in really good cosmetic condition too, it looks it i saw one picture, kinda dissapinted it didnt have the op8 output thing, at first he thought it did but went and checked and it didnt, that would have been a real score!
i almost waited until they got another one, but that could be who knows how long so i just jumped on it.

do any of you use your mv's midid up to your mpcs? ive been thinkin about tryin that out, never linked two peices of hardware before, it was always midid up to my DAW instead. i think it will be kinda cool to try out.

the clip board chopping feature looks DOPE!

one last thing, you guys ever tried the mv 8800 or 8000 mpc stuff pads?
might get those later on down the road, right now im just happy to have the machine being sent to me!

I think the mpc stuff pads are just alternate colours but no difference in feel.. I cant be sure but that is what it says (ie: not thicker)

just remember, this is not an mpc even though it has pads... it doesn't work like an mpc, it doesn't feel like an mpc, in fact I find the MV to be like a keyboard trapped in a drum machine's body haha... no joke, the way the banks are set up and how the sampler works etc.. you will probably agree once you try her out.

I never midi'd my mpc to the mv... I have my x7000 going to the midi in on the mv to play sample patches though (the x7000 also is split with a midi merge box to go to the s900 as well to control those samples)


one of my favourite things on the mv is the trick where you put it into mixdown mode (ie: it takes everything in your track as well as everything coming into the inputs and bounces it down to a stereo file streaming it onto the hard disk) because you can record audio coming in as a sample, or even as an audio track in normal mode but you are limited to your ram which it is true... 512mb is a lot.. however the 100+ gigs potentially is way more so yeah.. you pop it into mixdown mode and record right there and then onto the hard drive... that can be useful for recording sets.. or jam sessions in the studio and you dont gotta take up your computer and daw in the process.

Then the mastering mode offers a bunch of mastering tools like compressors and effects where you load up your wave file (probably the one you recorded from mixdown mode after you finished your beat) and now you can run it through all that stuff too.. which saves it as another wave file (not overwriting the original)

then you connect usb (1.0 sucks balls) and transfer to the desktop.

yeah, i think ill like the daw style of the mv more than the mpc for sequencing but ill find out when it gets here for sure.

that mixdown mode is hella cool that you were talking about, seems like a good way to get rough ideas out on a sketchpad.

you can drag and drop files into folders on the mv too?

i hate that about the mpcs as well, about it only having usb 1.0

how many characters can a file be? i know in the jjos 2xl it can only be 16, im hoping the mv is a little more leniant in this respect.

i have renaming hella files and batch converting them down to 16 bit. would be better if i could just convert them in 1 step.

i was looking at the chicken sys thing, is that pretty much like a bluebox or mpc 187 program creator thing?

for the 8800 the OS numbers are not the same as the 8000..


I am not sure... but I think the character limit is likely to be 16 characters not including the extension.

yes you can transfer folders of sounds from the desktop to the mv...

one thing though, when you get into usb mode and it opens up as an external hard drive on the PC.. it will look like your typical windows explorer system... at first you will not realize it but... it is just some sort of emulation. what you see is not actually the way things are set up in the MV structurally (if ever you remove the internal hard drive and mount it into your pc... you will see the true face of the way things are layed out which is close to impossible to work with) so dont mess around with the hard drive... drag n drop stuff.. but dont check disk, dont error correct.. it isn't your normal setup like you think. disk tools will likely screw something up.

also, one annoying thing that relates to the MV's system is the sorting of files and folders.... it is in chronological order only... not alphabetical, not nothing .. there is no sorting.

lastly, DO NOT just shut the power off... always shut down using the shut down button... flipping the switch will make you lose data.

while the vga and mouse option is nice...it dont make much difference imo.....from my experience editing using mouse was bit painful, given everything is fixed size and you cant resize the windows I found myself attempting to shift notes using mouse and it sucked big time in that tiny ass grid edit...

no, there is a shutdown button... you push it and it askes "are you sure you want to shut down (yes/no)" and then it asks if you wanna save...

make sure you do that... on the mpc you can just turn off the power switch.

one thing forgot to add is the mv did freeze on me number of times during hot ass summers...so save fequently if you stayin in warm state

hey the vga out on the mv8000 is in color isnt it? like on the lcd screen it would be color?

im having a headache trying to get that 8800 so im looking into a few other ones. there seems to be a 8000 around my area considerably cheaper than the 8800. it has the vga out but no op1.

i guess the main benifit is searching zero crossings for the 8800 that i would be using but i think i could live without that if i were to save 3 or 4 hundred dollars, the mpc doesnt do that anyway so im used to it.

yes the vga output on the 8000 is in colour... I believe it is identical to the 8800. I would even suspect that if the internal lcd was swapped it would display in colour too.. but I have no real info on that... it is just a theory
