Do I want the MPC 4000 at the standard 44.1khz or can I move it up to 48hz or what would 96hz do would that make all my samples 24 Bit I guess? What does this do?

Do you have an effects card in your 4k? If going high your effects capabilities will be halved. If low, your effects capabilities can be maxed.

Good Looking you guys....Gotta love this site for all the insight that you guys provide because Ive been using 24bit Pro Tools files and whatnot and was wondering if I should switch the 4K over to 48

24 bits and 48k are totally unrelated.

ok look heres a quick breakdown:

bits are not sample rate.

when you talk about sample rate you talk in 'Hz (Hertz)', or 'fs' (frames/second) or something else that denotes something happening at a regular rate OVER TIME.

when you talk about bits, you just say bits. bits has nothing to do with time, bits (in audio) is all about how precisely can you represent something at any ONE POINT in time.

bits are not sample rate. they are totally separate. you can have any sample rate matched with any bit depth (11khz / 24 bits, or 96k / 8 bits, etc etc).

a typical cd is 44.1kHz / 16 bits.

a sample at 96k / 16 bits takes up twice as much memory as a sample at 48k / 16 bits.

sample rate determines the highest frequency that can be heard, and bit depth determines how subtle the changes in sound can be represented.

a lower sample rate sound will have less treble.
a lower bit depth sound will sound distorted.

they are completely unrelated other than you need to define both when talking about a sampled signal (in our case, audio).
