E-MU ROLL CALL

well this we know to be true but so many people get caught up in thinking that the need the latest this greatest that to make music with and thats simply not true!! Drums are still Drums!! the same sound that some folks keep trying to buy is the same sound that was recorded years ago... I mean how do you improve the wheel? as for me i will continue to use what I have and make improvements when necessary.I love my old stuff and its fun to challenge yourself to find new ways to use them.. so understatement maybe factual? yes... Im not a Fanboy and I try to use as much stuff as I can when im in the lab. So if anybody has some gear they want to get rid of holla!!!( but make sure it works)

My E-mu love affair began at Rodger Dodger music in Hopkins. I wanted to get a proteus rack so bad back in high school...then I wanted a Emax II so bad... never could afford..

eventually...

Emax keyboard sampler (bought in pawn shop circa 1997).

E-mu Proteus 2000 (terribly dated sounds for me)

E-mu E5000 sampler Ultra- Sold or traded long ago

E-mu EIV Platinum (one of the last ones from the factory refurb pool) Sold in 2010.

E-Synth Keyboard v. (still used as main controller)

Emax HD Keyboard sampler (just bought on eBay last month) going full circle I guess.

I was thinking this might be worth a purchase - do you rate it?

I hope over time to have more Emu gear - currently have Emu Vintage Pro, got XL7 ROM in it, plan on adding World and Orchestral ROMs at some point soon. Like some of the Mo Phatt sounds too, nice drums + bass.

would like to have Emax or 6400 Ultra at some point

the sounds are kind of 80's,but you can edit them. It really depends on what kind of sound your after.since it came out there's been better drum module's made. in fact any good keyboard nowadays has better drums,unless you just want that particular sound.

I still use my emulator X3....filters are ridiculous.

Indeed. Beat up ones are going for $1600+ in the US. I saw that SP12 flick, nice score Clint.

Word.....I've been wanting one, but honestly would probably just use it for drums. I might follow Clint's footsteps and cop a turbo instead.....$600-700 is much better than $2k for 5 more seconds of sample time...

I don't have a lot of E-mu stuff, but the things i have i'm really happy with (E4X and SP1200).

FWIW I found a card reader that emulates the Commodore 1541 drives and plugs into the SP12 disc port. Wondering if this speeds up save/load operations. I know you can use an audio editor to save via the cassette port though I have not tried this.

if its a real emulator, then load, save times will probably be the same..ie VERY slow

just as easy to use your pc/notebook audio in, save to cassette function on sp
save to casette then try to load from cassette.....you need to play around with the audio level when loading...so if it fails first time try reducing the vol

i recently picked up a beat-up [but fully functional] sp-12 turbo as well..... i've just been using the cassette output for saving and storing the noise as an mp3 on my computer. maybe if there are enough sp-12 users here, we could start a thread where we share samples in that format or something...

EMU PK6 keyboard. very slept on keyboard. I had it expanded with the world rom and the pure phat rom and i believe the x lead too. the EPs on this thing were so sweet. My bands keyboard player would play these EPs over his arsenal of keyboards. sold when times got hard. regrets.

I later bought the Proteus 2000 module. sold it eventually to go all software.

emu made great products. I believe you can still get the sound sets in software form too.

gotta get a sp1200 at some point.

i still keep a maxed-out proteus2000 in my setup... i will say that it sounds much better than the software emulations of the roms available out there... for the price on the used market, the e-mu rack modules are a no-brainer... i even preferred the proteus over my korg tr-rack and ended up keeping it and getting rid of the korg...

I've passed up E-MU racks way too many times, but I have a lot of samples of them. Even the licensed ones for Digital Sound Factory (run by an former E-MU sound designer) don't quite match the hardware units. The Kontakt versions get closest using the scripting but the FX are where they really are noticeably different.

I converted the patches to .akp files and put them in the 4000, that works out pretty well overall to get back some of the presence and "oomph" in the sounds.

But like Crossings said these rack units are cheap and still useful.
