I just got my MPC 1000 a couple months ago and even though I haven't been using it as much as I would like (due to ridiculous amounts of overtime at work) I'm still able to put together halfway decent sequences and chop up/utilize samples pretty well. Now I was searching around and I saw an MPC 4k for sale for $750 usd the guy claims that it is in perfect working order and the only problems are cosmetic. He claims that he need $$$ for the holiday so he's selling it cheap. I paid about the same amount for my 1k from mpcstuff.com and it is in perfect working/cosmetic condition. I'm thinking about grabbing that 4k and selling the 1k. From what I have been reading, the 4k is pretty much the best MPC ever made and thats what's making me want to do this...what would you do if you were me??

at least take a look at the 4k... if it works fine, and depending on what cosmetically is wrong with it (is the case royally trashed? broken buttons or knobs.. etc) you could try and dive into the machine... then decide which you prefer. If you find the 4k is not your style, then make more than $750 off it by reselling it.

I'd see if I can swing purchasing the 4000 before selling the 1000, that's for sure.

I would have hoped that if you paid $750 for your 1k that it came with JJ. :(

If chopping is where you want to be then JJ is a much better choice than the 4k hands downs.

What I would suggest is you get JJ OS and a good pair of headphones.
The thing that was nice about the 1k is if you go ahead with JJ you can put on some headphones and work on tracks while watching tv or just sitting around.
Means even when you don't have time you have time to work out an idea.

I loved my 1k with jj, it was a beast, but wouldn't trade my 4k in for it or any other mpc really. I used to spend hours on the 1k and would walk around lookin like the hunch back of Notre dame after cramming over top of it. The 1k is a great machine but the 4k brings a little more to the table in my opinion. I will agree with the above post the chopping is slightly easier with JJ but I still chop on the 4k with ease and accuracy

Thanks all for the advice. I think i'll stick with the 1k for now. I downloaded the free version of jjos and I'm liking it so far. Although I am starting to feel the squeeze with the smaller pads being that i was using an MPD before I got my 1k. I'll just keep my eyes peeled for a 2500 in that price range.

What he said.

You can not compare the MPC 4000 to any other MPC..it has a high end sampler and synthesis engine, 24/96, an intel chip, 512 MB ram. Could hook a USB port to it with such things as a USB stick, external HD, and a keyboard to type file names. Features galore.

Ark I've had both, at the time JJOS1 was the latest, didnt dig too deep into 4k and used it like a 2500/1000 and I have to say "slightly easier" is bit of understatement, but that's my opinion...and now got n.d.c 8) if 4k had chopping like jj I'd be all over it.
