Card reader with Yamaha bridge in a 3000 "might" work

this is my first post. I'm a House & electronic music producer. Big up to the community.


So, I tried to put an internal CF card reader by using the Yamaha V769970 bridge SCSI/IDE since there is no way to find a cheap Acard 7720 in Europe. (I'm in France)

The SCSI number is recognized, i can make it active.

Unfortunatly, i can't format the card (error FF51)

but, by skipping the format procedure (soft key 2) in the format menu, i have access to the partitioning.

Partitions work, from A to Z, I can even save PGM & SEQ on the card but not the sounds.

I played with the jumpers for a while but no success for the format procedure.

What is the issue? My card? OS 3.11? or the bridge?

I had the same problem as you, but I was using a different bridge adapter.

The issue it turns out was that the Compact Flash card I was using identified itself as a removable drive and not a fixed drive. Once I found a card that identified itself as a fixed drive I was good to go.

This setting is defined by the OEM. Some cards you can get utilities to change it, you will have to do some digging. Or you have to find a CF reader that makes all cards appear to be fixed drives to the host device.

I bet if you connect an old IDE hard drive to your MPC it will work fine.

Do you know if OS 3.5 solves that issue?

I looked at your website, it's very informative however I don't find utilities under Mac to shift the cards..
so i will probably put an embedded cf card reader. They appear to be all in True Ide mode..

I bought the right card but it doesn't work..

Still the same, can read & write PGM & SEQ only, can't format.

The issue should be the Yamaha SCSI/IDE bridge or the Startech Cf card reader..

I'm not really confident with the Yamaha bridge, nobody here has reported something about it..

How did you connect the Yamaha V769970 to the MPC ?
I have one here but I have a different brand of card reader.
If I can get it connected to my MPC60 I can confirm if the Yamaha V769970 is ok or not.

The Yamaha bridge is connected directly to the card reader (IDE 40 pins)
and the 50 pins SCSI is connected to the mpc SCSI card by a SCSI ribbon cable & adaptaters.
I made a special "Y" cable to connect both units (Yamaha + card reader) in +5V, and the other end is plugged to the 4 pins floppy connection.

I miss the point.. do you have already a card reader in your 60 or do you want to put it in?

Where did you get the 50- 25 pin adapter ?
I have been unable to find any.

You need a 25F/50M and a 25M/25M

At what point of the format are you getting the FF51 error code? What are the other numbers that come after the FF51 error? FF51:XX:XX

A few things to check:

Is the F901 fuse on the SCSI board blown?

What is the termination set to on your bridge adapter?

Do you have any additional devices on the chain?

Is the SCSI ID in the MPC software set to the same as the bridge adapter?

Download the floppy image for OS3.16 and boot your MPC with this version of the OS. Try the formatting your compact flash card with the slow format option and see if it completes.

At what point of the format are you getting the FF51 error code? What are the other numbers that come after the FF51 error? FF51:XX:XX

FF51:305:20:00 displayed as soon as I valid the format procedure.

During the tests, only the CF reader is connected

I don't think so, I tried 0, 3 & 4

Only Kingston 512MB card is recognized by the mpc.
Transcend 1Go industrial, Sandisk Ultra 2Go are not.

From what I've gathered, a blown F901 will have no bearing on a self-terminating SCSI device.

Not exactly. A bad F901 comes into play if the device requires termination power from the MPC or master device. Some SCSI devices supply their own termination power such as Iomega SCSI Zips which might be why your Zip drive works and the bridge doesn't.

Does this particular Yamaha bridge supply its own termination power or does it require power from the master device?

You still need to check the F901 fuse with a multimeter to see if it's working.

Get a Y splitter cable to power both. These are available from most computer stores.
