Limitations are good though.
I think mute group function was introduced first on MPC-4000 (called key group), then MPC-2500 / 1000.
MPC-60, 3000, and 2000 series only have pad mutes, but don't have mute groups.
It sounded like a really bad news to me, when I was considering to get MPC-2000 (I got XL anyway, and I'm happy with it, after all the repair!), but I now realize that by chipping samples smaller, and use note off sometimes.
I haven't had situation where I really needed to use mute group, or at least I can use note off anyway.
I kind of feel that mute group is overused, even. (I think I've heard a lot of overly choppy MPC-based beats (not in a good way) on YouTube, and I think they are just using key group, so that they don't have to set up end points of each samples.)
I think the luck of mute group functions, make me chop samples smaller, and precisely. Remember, you can still set up pads to mute each other on older MPCs.
