Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

its a wicked filter!! if you don't have ana analouge filter in your studio and you do dance music your going to hell :), imo the mfc is one of he best buys out there, may not be as smoth as the mutronics (LP only) or as flexible as the filterbank but they cost 3-4 times more and don't have as solid midi specs, anything you but through it will get added warmth (man a few of these and a mpc really messes up the sp1200 hair due).. with a push of a button it will send global parameter "sysex" message to your seq storing every setting (exept the eq) that's exelent live or just for fx (sending multiple sysex over a loop) and lets not even start on using it with the 4k qlink seq,..the sound!? the filters are very wet like the old roland filters on the juno/jupiter series, the distortion is quite fat and the flanger is superb! I'm very suprised these haven't taken off (or have they) their like sub 300 new or something I want another one, ..only donwnside would be the noisefloor (nothing bad but not as low as the grand$ filters and it doesn't have filtertracking, in anycase its a great sounding set of filters.. bottom line: run a skinny handheld battery charged casio though it and it will sound like Elvis eating a Moog ..

oohh yhea btw on topic, there's a new akai sampler (3rack space gray model under the z8 in the rack pic) its called DSP1000 I belive and its akai's newest sampling engine (a 24bit 196k format I think) I heard a ridiculus retail price somewhare like 6000$ but their is defenatly a market for this in the high end studio industry.. just tyhough I'd share

I knew about but couldn`t attend it I had to work to paid the bills :D But I get to meet up with Naoya (guy with the MPC 1000) every now and then. I plan to meet up at the end of the month. Almost every 2 to 3 months Akai holds a event at a store somewhere. :D By the way there are quite a few brothers here in Japan just not working at Akai. But Akai and Japanese Hip Hop mags does meet up with alot of folks like Def Jef, Blaze and others in the States for their input and promotion in the magazines. One of the most popular Sound and Recording Mag, Blast, and others lists a whole lotta of shit in there more than Scratch and other U.S. and Brit mags. Just everythings in Japanese.

Akai Built in Japan stand by for a nice ass O.S. update coming soon. :D

Hmm... Such a prejudice statement. Considering that Akai is a Japanese company.

The nice thing about MPC's is that it's a musical instrument, and music generally
tends to cross race barriers.

Do you really think that the MPC is ONLY used in Rap music and ONLY by
African American's?

Shame....

I haven't seen anyone do that with MPC's, but we've got a Techno act inPortland
that uses 2 RS7000's hooked up to an Allen and Heath DJ mixer and uses that
all the time to belt out DJ like sets.

If you are into electronica this was the event to go to in Tokyo as the demostration was about using the MPC as a synth/sampler like aka Korg Electrobe ) or as a drum machine with a full backing band with keys, bass, and lead guitar players.

The usage of mpc by the general public is still relativity small compare to guitars, or two turntables and a mixer. It was generally the way brothers in the past used the drum samplers and the spread of hip hip/house/club/acid jazz/r&b and so on that took the mpcs out the pro studios into the bedrooms of djs. As I posted before many MPC designers still don`t understand why the djs/dance music producers used the machine the way they do until recently when the home market started to grow.

In the Japanese magazines I mentioned before mostly 80% of the mpc users are into hip hop and dance they interview and report about mainly the top U.S. producers from Jazzy Pha, Neptunes, Just Blaze, Krucial Keys (all who are African Americans so go figure) and the equip, techniques, and clients they work with. Those dudes drop a hell of a alot of tips figuring a lot of cats back home won`t check it.

A hell of alot of techno, trance, and others dance producers swing with the Roland MC909 and Korg Electribe series for instant automation of patches, and bpm matching of samples. filtering and so on. Not many people were using the MPC the way brothers were using it back in the day and still now.

It is true the MPC is used for making all forms of music including country, but most bands rock with a dj now and it is still rare for many people to even know what an MPC is. My main point is the mpc usage by many overseas musicians, djs, and producers, is greatly influenced by r&b, hip hip and african american producers they have read or were inform about that alot of mpc usage by bedroom djs are expanding into the home market.

To tell the truth alot of techno djs and producers are deeply into synths, rhythms machines, and software samplers without the need for an mpc. For all the Zeebras, Ozaras, Kick the cans, Dabos, Hasabes and so on they tend to graviate to the mpcs or Mv8000 (both made in Japan) that the African American producers are using.

I don`t think it was prejudice about the prior comment. I believe it was most likely ignorance. If you ask the average mpc users in the States to name the top Japanese, Irish, Kenyan, Indian, Singaporean, Panamian, Russian or whatever producer using an MPC they wouldn`t know and may be surprised at how far beatmaking terminalogy, techniques, and the feeling have spread in the world. It may not sound the same but the heart and the effort is their MPC for Life. :D

yeah, I think that is a midi controller (beside the 1000 on the first half page picture (right side), above the one with the guy in glasses and a tuque)

It looks like it's a step above the mpd 16, I'm only saying this cause it looks bigger?

True. I was thinking the same thing too when I read that statement, also because the statement seems to exclude Asians and Europeans from being 'brothers'. Afaic we're all brothers, regardless of skincolour the type of music we listen too, the kind of foods we eat or the tools we use to produce with.

I know the writer probably didn't mean to sound racially bigoted but to me that post did taste a bit 'odd'.

Cheers.

To tell you the truth it was just a joke.....and from looks of where your from i can tell you i dont think that only african americans use a mpc cause i didnt think blacks live in Portland OR! When i go to other websites like yamaha or korg most of the users over there think a mpc is so useless since they have seq. built in. I think the mpc is used in hip and rnb more than any other type of music.

Young bro hasn`t been to the Westside that`s all!!!! Check out that samplekings site and you can peep Mr Naoya doing this thing with the MPCs. Hes one of the designers you know from the 2k on up. And remember young keyz do you.

Hmm.. I think everyone's right, I was the one dishing out the prejudice statement by
assumming all brothers are black ... my bad!

There are plenty of races in Portland OR, but definitely more on the caucasian trip. I'm
American Indian (well 1/2) and theirs plenty of us around, but they tend to want to stick us in reservations so we're not noticed as much.

Both Yamaha and Korg, as well as other manufacturers make samplers/synths with
squenecers. Korg makes it's Electribe series, Yamaha makes it's RS7000 series.
The Korg Triton has a sequencer, the Yamaha Motif has a sequencer. Not quite
sure what you mean that the MPC's are useless since they have a sequencer.

To me, THAT was one of the main things that brought me to it. I have drum machines,
synths and samplers , but not a REALLY good dedicated hardware sequencer.

I will agree with your statement that the MPC is used more in hip hop and r&b but I can
state that I personally know many many many people who have used it for
Techno, for Electro, for House , for Ambient, for Dub. They don't flaunt it on their front album cover but it's what's making the beats and noise....

You'd probably be amazed at how much is actually produced on it.

Again, sorry for distracting from the real part of this thread about the new products showcase. I"ll try to hold my Knee Jerk reactions for a day and think them out more...
