The Emax is NOT the SP12's engine. the SP12's engine is more similar to, the Emulator II, the same keyboard in ferris beuler's day off. :D

but the thing is F'n huge, but you want to talk about LO FI great sounding?

also the emulator 1...what a dream that is...lol. 8 bit...stored in 12 bit, demuxed down. whatever it does. I forget but it's the same engine as the sp12's just more lofi.

mp3 wrote:And anyway, you can just lower your sample rate when you're sampling. Same difference...

that's not always true.
simply lowering the sample on one machine is most often NOT a substitute for the sound of all another machines parts working together.

you've got input/output stages
ad/da conversion
resampling algorithms
sample storage algorithms
filters
envelopes
error correction
etc etc that all play a part in one machines sound.

maybe i misunderstood you but i just want to help dispel the myth that lower-sampling rates is all it takes. i think you're right about the emax...probably very similar.

Honestly if that the sound you want, you should hold off and save up a lil more cash. SP-12 (original or turbo) go from $400-$700. Just keep searchin and you will find one.

I got my SP-12 (non turbo) for $425.

maybe you can get a E-Mu Drumulator
i believe it is more cheap than a SP12/SP1200, but it only got rom samples (you cant record your sounds on that machine), and don't know if it's rare in France but i suppose it is.
maybe the SP 12 (turbo) is the best choice, but you need 5" floppies to save your data which i think are not easy to find nowadays...
don't know

True.

Not true.

The EMAX itself was a redesigned (for cheaper, more efficient scale production) Emulator II based on custom chips. The SP was an upgraded Drumulator II

You did. What I was saying is that the EMAX SE has the ability to adjust the sample rate of a sample after sampling. The base EMAX doesn't have that ability, but you can still adjust the sample rate prior to sampling, which will give the same result as adjusting the sample rate after the fact.

dryad-66 wrote:+1 on the sp303......

i'm buying one of this little boxes
i want one since it came out
i don't understand one thing:
in this page they say that got no sequencer
http://www.vintagesynth.com/roland/sp303.php
but in the youtube videos is showed how to record patterns in the machine
so it got to have a sort of internal sequencer
right?
for 156€ (with 6 months warranty) seems a good deal
the machine is near mint and works well, and also got the smartmedia card

there is a pattern mode that allows you to record several patterns, but it does not allow multiple patterns to play at once, so you pattern out the drums then overdub samples and so on, or do like i do and us the resample function to record live patterns and then the you patterns are like samples and u can play multiple of those

no problem, lol I sent that via mobile and didn't realize how broken the response was. When you get it PM if you have any questions, the sp resample function it worth the money alone, super fast and easy to effect and tweak samples on the fly

i will say the sp303 is pretty dope if you can get it for cheap.

totally different than an mpc, but really cool for playing stuff live and really great for you cats that like long samples. aren't they loaded directly from the card? there's really no 'RAM limit' is there?

decent even just as an fx box so that's cool.

feedback on that thing is out of this world.

hot damn that is nice

yeah since the 60 ram upgrade are no longer around I got the sp, and its goes beastly with a 60. I'll sample with the 60, chop how i want and what not then resample over to the 303 for effects and to free up my 13 seconds of sample time in 60, then just trigger the sp via midi from the 60 and leave my drums in the 60. Not gonna lie, my dream setup since I was 17
