Share your knowledge on these two classic MPCs

So me and my brother are in a heated debate.

He claims that when you sample into the MPC3k, and then chop that sample up, it "resamples" the chops.

For me, this doesn't make sense, why would the MPC3k resample the sample that has already been sampled? Isn't that a waste of energy, or possibly RAM?

um, well... i believe you are just removing (trimming) off bits when you change the start and end points of the sample... you aren't re-recording, or resampling anything in the traditional sense of the word as far as I would technically know...

you could do that if you really really wanted to.. but it would require two mpcs.

Think of it as a steak. You trim off the fat and are left with the good parts. No re-sampling.

Exactly what I was telling my brother. But he is still saying that i'm wrong. He is saying that you guys are talking about chopping off end points and start points, and he is talking about the actual CHOP being resampled.

His argument is that when you chop a sample, and copy that chop, the resampling occurs at that point because the MPC3k has to once again run the sound through its audio engine.

But if this were true, then each chop would take up even more RAM because then that means each chop is being sampled again!

I'm not sure if i'm being clear enough or making sense haha.

He says this is the only way to chop on the MPC3k, you have to take your sample, and copy each region you want to sample, and then assign it to a pad.

My argument is that is not the only way to do it, you can highlight parts of a sample, extract that part, and assign it to a pad. This process saves RAM.

I dont know... but chopping a sample is not the same as resampling... and that is not what is happening when you chop off a piece.

resampling on the 2000xl (the first mpc as far as I know to have the resampling feature) you can have the machine resample samples to what ever bitrate you want up to 16.

resampling on the asr-x .. that the ability to internally have the machine sample itself from it's main outs.. you push the record button and then make some noise with the pads or play your sequence .. the end result is a pad with all that one the one pad. That can be used to save ram because it can be used to layer sounds together giving you the option to delete others.

take lampdog's steak analogy, except every cut you make.. you dont get a new piece of steak.

When chopping no re-sampling is done at all.
