I had to pass on the Nektar. Having only 12 pads just irks me to no end. That was the deal breaker for me. I had looked at every MIDI controller since NAMM in January and realized I was just better off sticking with my Axiom 49. But I still needed 16 pads, since I sold the MPC1000. So I bought the Korg PadKontrol and also found the ReTouch RpK 3rd party software, which gives me lots of control when used in conjunction with an iPod Touch running TouchOSC. Between the Axiom 49 and the PadKontrol, I've been very satisfied, and saved a lot of money in the process.

There's also software for use with NI Maschine. Speaking of which, I just got an email today from NI, announcing a price drop for both the Maschine and the Maschine Micro. Both units have dropped $100 in price. So for those looking for the best of both worlds, it's something worth looking into. I'm not endorsing Maschine, nor do I plan on buying one. But I know there's always a few people with money burning a hole in their pockets. So more power to you!

I also forgot to mention that Nektar have been working on refining the Panorama, due to the release of Reason 6.5. If memory serves me correctly, they're working on mapping out the new Rack Extensions. So it's unknown at this time when they work all that out.

I honestly think the Korg padkontrol pads are the most responsive I've ever used. I saw them described in a review as "like frozen jelly".

Seriously though I've had 3 MPD's (kept the 32 and Fat Padded it), I have a Trigger Finger, Maschine and 4 MPC's. I seriously think the Korg's responsiveness is the best of all them. Prior to the Fat Pads in my 1000, I always used the Korg to play the 1000.

I feel you on the Nektar distortedtekno. It's so close to what I'd want but just misses the mark. I was going to get ReTouch and I think they have a Live one you can buy. I ended up getting Lemur though. I haven't really used it though.

The PadKontrol is very responsive... even more than my MPC1000 with the Fat Pads, as well as the MPD18 I bought and returned a week later. But the only thing I don't like is the velocity curves aren't as good. So I should get in touch with the dev from ReTouch and see if there's anything he can do with that. It's not entirely important, since I'm not always trying to replicate anything natural. But in some instances, I will need a better velocity curve if I were working on rock, metal, or anything else of that nature. One other thing I'm not too fond of is the sound of plastic while beating on the pads. But I've gotten used to it. However, I'm thinking of ways to mod the plastic casing to dampen that plastic vibration. Not too sure how I'm gonna go about that. But I'll take it apart eventually and see what can be done. It does seem a bit quieter with foam padding underneath. So i'll have to rummage through my brother's basement tomorrow, since he's always ordering stuff online and may have a good piece of foam that's dense enough. I don't wanna use my MoPads from my studio monitors. They got more expensive since I bought them 10 years ago.

I'm considering grabbing this iOS app, RS-Touch. It only handles the mixer, but seems to mimic the Reason GUI wonderfully. I'll probably grab ReTouch as well.

Retouch duo allllll the wayyy, you can control the entire mixer with that as well.

Good point on the completeness of Retouch. I still may end up using the RS-Touch though. I use Reason with a BCF-2000, Nocturn, MPD32 and a keyboard. So I don't need control of the rack modules as much from the iPad. I would surface lock the iPad/Alesis/RS-Touch to the mixer and let the BCF-2000 "follow" the rack modules. It's actually great for the synths with Reason's mapping of it.

I really liked how retouch turns all the devices into little synths with their own keyboard, plus options like confining midi notes to certain scales and keys which would be unavailable otherwise.
