Punch vs MPC1000

So I just got a 4000 and can instantly recognize the better DA conversion, it just sounds so much better than a 1000.

I've only messed around with it for a couple hrs, but do you guys have any suggestions on how to get super punchy drums? On the 1K, I would use the bit grunger in conjunction with a high ratio, slow attack, fast release on the master compressor.

Anything similar on the 4k? Have tried a little compression, but it doesn't seem to punch the same way (although being able to run in parallel is nice). The Distortion on the 4K also doesn't come close to the bit grunger on the 1K, although every other effect seems insanely better.

The enhancer might be what I'm looking for?

First off, distortion and bit grunger are totally two different effects. Bit Grunger basically reduces the 16bit sound down to 12, 8 or 4 bits, giving that grainy sound. Distortion, well just distorts like guitars in metal music.

The converters in the 4k are 24bit@96kHz while the 1k are [email protected], thats why you noticed the difference.

I don't own a 4k but if its packed with effects, you might want to check out lo-fi type of effects which is related to bit grunger.

I thought the bit grunger on the 1k sounded too robotic, but thats me.

you could prolly pick up one of the akai rack samplers for cheap to achieve that

You could also go to sample>edit>scroll over to resample>then down convert to 16/12/8 bit in the MPC 4000. S900/950 does the trick too, but that's an extra trip outside the machine.
