this is "maschines" father!

More like the grand daddy of DAWs and features that are appearing on other programs today.

I wonder what year your mv is from

They still work in patterns with a funky song mode.
Turning the loop off only allows you to work without a predefined pattern size.
That is no where near working in a linear fashion, if you think it is then you are greatly confused.

You are only here to create misinfo not correct it.

I am sorry. It is you who is confused. Because it seems you have no idea what "linear" actually means. I will explain it to you but don't take my word for it. Download and read the manual (any MPC manual).

The "funky song mode" brings that funk! (pun intended). You can "choose" to work in loops (any size you like) and string these loops together in song mode. And if you have an MPC that supports it, you can convert your finished song back to a linear sequence.

Or

You can just work in a linear fashion from the start by turning off loop (just like a DAW). You can set your sequence to record as many measures as you like (up to 999 on the MPC 2000XL). If you don't know how many measures you want your sequence to be...great. You can set it to 999 and truncate the unused measures. Or you don't have to do anything but record. Once you record beyond your "predetermined" settings, the MPC will automatically add new bars while recording. MPCs even have punch in/out recording...just like? A DAW :P

As I stated earlier, you seem to be just a bit confused what linear recording is. But that is why I am hear to help inform the misinformed. I can educate your further if I know which MPC model you own/use.

I think there is confusion what the term "linear" means. In music production products, it has two meanings. There is a linear which deals with hard disk recorders and the way data is stored on hard drives. Then there is linear (or pattern/loop) which applies to recording methods of DAWs, MPCs, etc. Linear means straight line. MPCs have since 1980s recorded in a linear fashion or loop/pattern based fashion. Old Atari sequencers recorded in a linear fashion. These products are precurors to DAWs. Just because DAWs have added significantly more functions doesn't make MPCs not linear.

I'm not sure where the confusion lies on this topic.

Maschine has its own way of doing things which is unlike a multitrack recorder, DAW, or MPC. It has no tracks. Track based sequencing just makes sense.

Again.....download any MPC manual and read it.

*By the way.....this is my last post as Askia Shaheed. I am changing my name for the New Year...maybe Romie-MPC Forum-Peace...... I have to get ready to drive to Yokohama!

Happy New Years everyone!

Wow dude! You don't know WTF you are talking about! Turning off the loop allows you to make/compose a complete song without having a single section ever repeat itself, which is LINEAR, just like Pro Tools, or Cubase, or Reason, or Logic, or (insert DAW name here). And just like an MPC, all of those programs can be set to loop and create non-linear patterns! The MPC's timeline is set up the EXACT same way as a DAW; bars, beats, and time.

When you record it is ALWAYS in a linear fashion.

Afterwards, what you do with that data and/or according to what platform it's on it can be either or.

You guys are just talking in the most simplistic form.
Jahrome made the statement that working on the MPC is just like working on any DAW or sequencer and it's not.

You can not disallow the the functional abilities and available editing when you make a statement like that.

You are trying to over simplify the comparison.

We were discussing Maschine's sequencer and the fact it isn't track based. I commented that the MPC state of mind is how DAWs and keyboard workstations are set-up...specifically talking about track based recording. You added that MPCs are not linear and only pattern based unlike DAWs. You comments have not been accurate. Adding talk about functional abilities and available editing have nothing to do with classifying a sequencer as linear or pattern-based.

Let's continue to keep this discussion civil.

Well, it is that simple. Linear means linear (key word LINE), not a bunch of available editing features. Editing capabilities has nothing to do with it. Plain and simple, can I compose music in a single line format in an MPC? Yes I can! Frankly, I think you are just over complicating something simple! There is nothing complicated about a straight LINE!

And as far as editing, aside from plugins and advanced automation, you can basically do the same editing techniques in an MPC that you can in a DAW, one way or the other.

I play REAL percussion, nonetheless due to my experimental nature, i went hardware years ago, then went to software and pad controllers until recently . Whist the options with software were mindboggling , i found myself doing more learning and experimenting than actually playing music. Sooooo, i have returned to hardware, call me weird, but i like the standalone aspect. This is where MPC screwed up. What i would really like to see is a standalone unit that is expandable with todays fast paced environment. One i could have the option to hook up a larger monitor, have a built in synth like the 5X, and better file management. BEAT THANG has kind of has the right idea, but i never played with one, plus i dont like the pad layout. In short, i would like to have a dedicated standalone unit that is as powerful as todays PCs and MAC yet not have to hook up to my computer. I have had numerous live problems taking my laptop on the road ( not to mention crashes, viruses, etc) .....something i have NEVER encountered with hardware. Im not comparing Maschine or other to older MPCs , that would just be silly. Apples to oranges considered , i'm sticking with oranges (hardware) at the moment for live, yet still do quite a bit of editing on the apple (computer) before dumping it on to the MPC for live. Look ma....no laptop!

i havent read further than the first couple pages, but i just wanted to add that the maschine does in fact support crossfade looping, its just called adh mode, or someting similar.
