Take influences from others but pursue your own style.
Listen to Hip Hop, D&B, Dubstep, Classical or whatever, and find out what makes them work... then shuffle up the various elements like a deck of cards and see what happens. Where do you think new styles and sub- genres come from?
Forget about being "unique" or having any kind of "selling point"... they both cancel each other out in the music industry, unless you're fantastically talented or lucky.
Being told your music is "dope"
is flattering but ultimately meaningless. The day someone tells you your track destroyed a dance floor or took them to an entirely different place, will be much more rewarding. I'm still waiting on that, but I'm not giving up hope...
If you were asking for specific techniques I apologise.
