5 down on the tracks

This is a hot feature. I wish a few things could be tweeked.
-- Q links work with pan and level.
--the first seven letters of the track name were shown instead of the big Active track square
-- pressing a pad selects the active track.

This is something i just dont get at all. I mean i understand what it does but I cant really see the practical side to it at all. I am so trying not be a grumpy old man, but i dont see how it is any good really. I am getting too cynical maybe. I saw the feature when i downloaded update and thought that this is stupid, why on earth do i need that. I know whats in the tracks- i wrote them lol

edit: mpc was rebooting all of a sudden, so back to the supadupa stable 2.30

@bliprock - lol, do you ever edit them? I tend to make a lot of variations on recorded patterns so that's the case where I see this being useful, getting stuff to line up or not if you're doing lots of copying and pasting. Also, you can paste onto a different track with less button pressing.

This looks like a great new feature, can't wait to try it out this weekend.

I edit a fair bit.
I dont know I really like how I can have say a 2 bar or 4 bar view and then just use mode and jogwheel to jump between tracks and see the notes that way. Makes it a breeze to cut copy paste and also visualise information. Essentially thats what this is for, this new 5 view. But since I can all ready visualise it in my head and in grid edit mode i think its overkill. Even for Scoring complex MIDI arrangements I guess it helps a bit, but I dont consider it a great leap forward at all, for above reasons. I love using this method to as I get a fair few tracks going. So going from say track 22 to 1 in any screen realy quickly is the best thing.
THough My biggest gripe is that the MODE button has to be held, but I know why because if you hit a pad as MODE button is flashing it opens a window from main screen ect. MAybe the option to make the Numeric key act like MODE button but in a toggle mode. IE we dont have to hold down a button and use jog wheel. we could then switch tracks constantly with jog wheel and hit pads and use q link stuff at the same time. Would so be friggin amazing thats for sure. Ooops sorry I went off topic.

^ are you using extra hardware including a computer?
you could use a latch plugin to turn an incoming midi note into an on/off switch for the mode command. hit the key once, mode turns on. hit it again, mode turns off.

i also use mode + dw to change tracks sometimes. these days i mostly change tracks by hitting the corresponding number on a computer keyboard number pad.

Good idea Nym, but I dont use a computer at all in the lab. Just MPC and synths ect. So yeah not a solution for me. I like it though. Thinking inside the box

Posted this in an unrelated thread too, but one other thing I think it could help with - you could make a beat out of synth patches on different midi channels and use 5 tracks view the same way as grid mode.

this is awesome! if im not mistaken, this makes your Main screen more like a DAW style type thing?

i really like that JJ is adding some more visual type features for us that are used to making beats on a linear DAW sequencer vs. a pattern based sequencer like the mpc.

could someone confirm that for me? i read the page in the manual, but i just wanted to make sure 100% cause my os right now runs real stable, i have heard that the new "loop" mode can be very unstable, but this feature looks right up my alley, if it does in fact do what i described above.

and what is the deal with loop mode? if i just stay away from that does the new OS run stable enough for you guys?

im running jjos 2xl v. 2.22 currently

no, for me not. i´d like to use the new 5-track feature, but the mpc was crashing and rebooting all of a sudden while working on a beat. this has NEVER happened with 2.30.

damn, thatas the kinda stuff i was worried about, the new feature looks pretty cool, but i dont want to have an unstable OS, i was thinking i could save my v 2.22 file and if the new OS crashed i could re-load that one, but i'm kinda scared to even load up the new OS file because ive never done it before.

im sure it would be fine, but it still makes me a little leary.

did you do anything in particular to make the mpc crash? or was it just crashing in random spots?
