SD vs CF

has anyone messed with the SD ide adapers?

I'm wondering whether this would work for me.. I'd much prefer SD over CF

Let me know if there's any forum knowledge on the topic.
Or else maybe I'll have to be the guinea pig

If you try it, it might work, probably not though....The mpc is IDE/ATAPI...Very few IDE devices are configured for ATAPI. If this SD reader does work, you wont be able to hot swap.

I run a 16gb CF. There is no difference between sd and cf (except cf is tried and tested). If you HAVE to have SD check this out:

Keep in mind though, I think it sectors the card into 1.44 mb partitions, lol

looking for storage solution for my soon to arrive mpc2kXl i stumbled upon this:

expensive, but hot swappable, CF AND SD, I'm pondering if going this way (cheaper than the MCD Kit 2 from mpc-suff) or the ADDONICS stuff.

You have 16gb CF in Your MPC 2000xl??

yup. 16 GB Kingston Elite Pro CF (I think its a type 2). I copped it from scsiforsamplers.com back in the day (last year, lol.) JD went outta business for a min. then popped back up under scsicardreaders.com, but I think hes done for good now. Dude hooked it up ill!

I'm pretty sure that this SD IDE adapter is NOT hot-swappable. It might work, but I'd prefer CF card though, because SD card is too small. (Also, I remember SCSI for Samplers guy warned us on using SD card reader on XL, as he said that data corruption often happens on CS card on XL.)
Since this is IDE device (not ATAPI), maximum partition you can create on SD card is 1GB.
If you want hot-swappable card reader (ATAPI device) that works with XL, you have to pay extra. Most of ATAPI card readers won't work with 2000XL.

I tried sd reader cheap one off ebay it works no hotswap, only formats cards to 1gb this seems to cause a problem with file system on sd cards can be repaired with software but its a headache and sometimes the mpc fails to see sd card, I will eventually get a cf reader these are better because then connect direct to ide bus and some cf cards have inbuilt controller chip to handle this. I think Sandisk cf cards have this function I read it in a pdf once.

^^^yeah thats it. I think its a type 2 because of the S2 at the end of the part #(bottom right). Scsiforsamplers dude has it specially formatted into 15x1GB sectors for the mpc2000xl. I dont know what formatting method he used, but It is specifically labelled: "do not reformat, for use with the MPC2000XL."

Too bad dude isnt still in business. He had scsi cf arrays with multiple 16 gb cards, as well as internal "ssd's" Basically a 16GB cf mounted internally to the MP.

He probably formatted it on linux, but if I insert that card into usb card reader, win XP will show me 16 partitions per 1 GB and every partition will be accessible, writable and readable? Or do You use this card as storage device in MPC only?

I am not too sure how useful those 16GB partitioned CF cards for 2000XL, practically. I am pretty sure those higher capacity cards (larger than 1GB) only works with SCSI CF reader (which is very hard to find) or hot-swappable ATAPI CF reader that works with XL (I think, for the largest partition with ATAPI CF reader was larger than 1GB, but I am not too sure.)

But, 1GB is really a big space for a data storage for XL! Remember, you can always transfer data between your PC and 2000XL (CF card). I think it is better that way, because you can develop habit of making backup of your work on your XL onto your computer, and with PC, you can organize contents on the CF card (which is near impossible task with 2000XL alone.)
Use Windows, not Mac, to do those chores, as Mac always leave invisible files on CF cards. I am a Mac user myself, so I use VMware Fusion for that.

I know I know! Im only looking for some options, now i have 128mb so I'm looking for 1 GB. Since he wrote about 16 GB i said WOW. 16GB might be good for save and forget and not to worry about free space forever. Of course backup is my best friend when i have 128 mb. Most annoying thing is when in mpc sample names have more than 8 characters and in PC (FAT16) only 8. And when copying to PC samples named for ex. SAMPLE_11 SAMPLE_12 , PC shows SAMPLE_1 and second SAMPLE_1 and ask for overwrite sorry for offtopic

^^^^My card has 15 1 gb partitions labelled A-O. Its super easy to organize (Eg:D=Drums, L=Loops B=Bssslines C=Completed projects, etc.). I keep a notebook as a save log for my MPC and my SP303, so I can refer to it if I forget where anything is saved. Im super anal with staying organized...But you will be too after the first time you lose a large amount of data!

This is legit, I bought this for my old MPC2KXL and CF and SD both worked perfectly.
