prog rock...sampler friendly

anybody mess with these kind of records,and are you a fan of any particular group?i dont about you,but im definitly feeling "moody blues"

progrock is mad hit and mis alot of offkey singing and reverby gitars, lol.

u can find some really interesting breaks but the bad part is ur gonna have to listen to alot of bullshit to find it.

I always try and peep the soundtrack side of it, but some shit that i got that aint to bad on the ears is:

i wanna get a copy of that weather report album but that is classed as jazz fusion i belive.

my boy got that bo hannson and he liked it. The weather report is jazz fusion like jpeg was sayin. I just got a bunch of there records for dirt cheap like 2 bucks a record a few days ago. i got this wierd synth rock record called space art and i flipped bout every song on that album

I used to listen to a lot of prog rock back in the day. Rush, Yes, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, early Genesis. Shredding musicianship, though a bit corny and wanky.

I was going to mention Yes, but I heard a new De La Soul track yesterday: The Grind Date, from the album of the same name. See http://audio.negroplease.com/ for a authorized MP3 of it.

They've sampled a section of "Ritual", from the Yes album "Tales From Topographic Oceans"! Now, I'm a huge Yes fan going back many years, but I'm not too impressed by what they've done here - too repetitive. If you've not heard of this album, it's a total trip. Four sides of vinyl with four songs, 20 minutes each. "Songs" is the wrong word, more like mini-symphonies.

Beyond that, I'm playing around with samples from Bill Bruford's "Perpetual Change" solo (Yessongs): drum solos are a great source of breakdowns and loops. 80's Genesis got panned for being too Pop, but right now I'm getting inspired to feed bits of "Invisible Touch" through Recycle to mangle the tempo...

Then there's Marillion, who were a bit corny in the 80's, but they left all that behind in the 90's, got all moody and deep, top sounds. Rush today are probably too heavy to sample, but if you can find Grace Under Pressure, that will work IMHO, and Presto has a super-clean production, ready for messing with...

King Crimson... where do I start? 'Nuff to say I've set my MPC1000 up with real Mellotron samples (from Hollow Sun), which I play from keyboard. A Blast From The Past.

Mike Oldfield "Hergest Ridge" is one of my all time favorite albums.

I got a ton of prog records from my dad... they're not too bad if you get creative with finding ways to flip a sample... theres not too many breaks in it... but its all about what records you find.
