Potential Purchase

Hi,

As it stands at this point in time is the MPC 5000 a stable machine to work with? To be honest i'm only really looking at getting one to use as a main midi hub for sequencing external hardware. Of course the sampler will get used if only for the basics. I've spent the past week looking over these forums but have been left unsure of the general consensus. (Not interested in the Renaissance)

i've got mine since 2 or 3 weeks and it worked better than i thought... during the winter holidays i had it on the hole day everyday and i had no problem at all.

i use that to make beats, i like the all in one solution idea... i sequence external stuff just to record synths or whatever in the unit, so i don't really know how could it be for more extensive external gear sequencing. sure i would trust the 5k

Yes i suppose but i have this almost unquantifiable desire to use the mpc with its pads as my midi centre piece. I know it's crazy, especially when the money could probably be spent more wisely but i've always been one of those people that get more creative if i get a buzz out of using certain equipment, a lot of my favourite techno / house producers use mpc's & i simply love the idea of being able to create with the same machines.

For your needs, I'd say a 5000 is massive overkill. Its MIDI features and associated workflow are no better than most MPCs. Save yourself some cash and grab a second hand 1000 or 2500. You'll still get the same buzz, but you'll have money to spare on other equipment. Heck even an old 2000XL would serve you for what you describe and these go for around £300 on ebay these days.

Overkill to begin with but great to have something i could find more uses for as i get into it.

How many midi outs and ins do you need?
MPC tutor is right about it being overkill for a midi controller.... A cheaper/used MPC would be an alternative to the 5000.

Decided to get an Octatrack first then maybe an MPC later in the year.

I'm thinking of getting a 4K or 5K used. Besides the 4K having 6 pad groups (96 pads), more songs, is there a significant difference to get a 5K versus a 4K? Thanks in advance.

5k virtual analog synth is a good reason. unless u already have a virtual analog synth. effects and input thru makes it a good effects process for other gear
