It would be great to have a way to cut, copy and paste bar-length pieces of audio in audio tracks.

Motivation: I record audio directly onto the audio track while sequence is playing. It'd be really nice to simply cut out unwanted parts (snapping to the bar), and then copying and pasting a phrase a few times throughout the track.
Currently I need to go into Trim mode and manually search out the start and end points, and it's not always accurate to do this by ear. If there is a better way please let me know.

i love this idea.
a different use of this function would be for stuttering or glitching at X tc level
zoom in, copy bits and paste away.

this would be a whole new mode of chopping - regular slice, NDC, and audio track copy.

I would use NDC though yes its more work getting tempo and arranging the chops with sequencer. But I thought that maybe that it would be cool if it worked the same as midi and drum windows in that the forward and back keys < > would jump to start of next bar. So then you could do 1/4, 1/2, selections. So you could put cursor in where you want and select with < > to get a bar length or what ever length depending where start cursor is. But then i dont use audio tracks lol, so wouldnt really use it. But yeah maybe I would if i could do things like that. But then with NDC programms i already do that in a way.

Good ideas. The important thing for me is that it just cuts/copies but aligned with the main sequencer bars/grid Super quick rearranging of blocks of audio. Trim is great for precise edits but not nice for just moving blocks of audio around

Maybe an easy first step would be the ability to split the audio into two samples, based on wherever the cursor is located?

Cheers. Now that I think about it a bit more, the only thing that is really needed is to split the sample at the cursor point. There is functionality already in audio tracks to insert a sample at a specific bar (implements copy) and to set the sample at that bar to empty (implements cut).

How about it JJ? This would give a lot of value!

I think there is something to do inside the grid edit for audio tracks. At the moment it is a bit useless. It would be cool if he could implement copy/cut/split and paste functions.

cool especially if it were non destructive...no new sample need be created, etc.
like how the FADES work in grid audio edit.

one thing to notice is in audio tracks, if you go to STEP EDIT, you can see the events listed.

i really love this FR, it may be one of my top 3. thanks for thinking of it.

wow thanks for the trick. I never thought of using STEP EDIT with audio tracks but indeed MOVE COPY and PASTE are already there.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you can split the audio in Step Edit?
Splitting the audio at the cursor point would really open up the potential for the audio tracks.
Sorry for bumping the thread, but I really, really want this :)

I have been using the Audio tracks a real lot lately. I have a method that works very well for the above problem. Here is a quick and easy way to chop out a bar in a audio track........

1. OK point one is, and I can not stress this enough, You gotta be in correct tempo and you have to make sure Audio track is lined up correctly to the time. So when you go to bar one it is bar one of audio track. Or at least make sure start of a bar in the audio track syncs with the bars in sequence. In other words if you do not line up this will not work very well. People are not always in time, so if you are say cutting up a long song then expect changes in tempo, as no one is a computer and keep perfect time. If it is a huge tempo change then think about adding it to sequence as well. If you are in the right tempo you can adjust start point later (of audio tracks sample) to get around tempo drift.

2. Ok so if you did above correctly then rest is easy as. When in audio track pads go forward and back, and as it is now lined up with tempo and sequence, and so therefore aligned together, then when you go back and forth you will be jumping from bar to bar. Sorted. 8)

3. What you want to cut out a bit?? easy, say you want to cut out 3 bars from bar 25 onwards, out of that audio track. Go to bar 25. Start of bar is aligned to start of bar in audio track. If it has drifted, and tempo does, then move start point of audio track to get it aligned. This might change every time you do this, only a little bit if its humans playing expect the tempo to drift. So get it aligned as above but do not expect that to be perfect with music as tempo changes a little. No big deal.

4. The cut - so this is where you resample from output. Make sure effects are off unless you want then on. To make sure you get just certain bars, then use mute. Simply temporary insert a mute track message at the end. So in above example to get just 3 bars from bar 25, i set sequence to bar 25 and record mute at start of bar 28.

This gives you perfect bar extraction every time and you also have the tempo of the sample. :| The only reason i have been using this is because of remix comps i been looking at. It works a treat. So give it a go. You will find a little bit of work like this gives great rewards

+1

This has been requested many times.

I would also like to have the ability to adjust the selection in step increments (not only bar length).

yeah as per above method I mentioned, I feel no need for this request IMHO. If you apply the method above you can easily cut out any bar or any number of bars in a audio track very accurately. In fact I am using it right now for MPC-Forums Battle. I reckon JJ cant program MPC to determine bar start, and the tempo is going to be averaged and therefore not accurate enough over say more than a few minutes of music, or even a few bars, some bands move the tempo round a lot.. This is my opinion, but as you can see there is a few things that come together to make this work and to automate this work to me is LAZY and probably wont work for above reasons( where is bar start & what is exact tempo).
Sorry guys, but because I can cut out any bar from any audio track already it seems like you cant figure it out or not even trying. Not even tying the method I took the time to share above means that you are not contributing in a constructive way. Sorry again Astronaut that means you, as well as any one else that does not try the method i showed you and still want this request. I see you jump on here and and wanted it too as you have posted about it before, and I said same above method to try. Did you??? Try it, i mean?? PM me if you are not clear. Flame me if you are are insulted. All I ask is that you actually try the method AND then come at me with what you do and do not like about it. It works beautifully and everyone else here that reads this and does as I say will greatly benefit from it. I mean its why we are here to share, but I get annoyed when I actually determine a work flow with great benefits that works, and you all want JJ to do it for you. I know in this day and age you might expect it to do everything, but this is the nature of the beast, it works if you do the WORK. So work it people. Use the method i wrote and THEN come at me. I am almost tempted to do a crappy vid cos its actually a lot of fun to jump through the bars of some song you just dumped in the audio tracks.
