Producers That Went From Hardware, To Software ... To Failur

Who do you personally feel went from hardware to software and ended up going backwards in their career?

Personally I feel Harry Love is one of them. From hardware to Pro Tools ... his beats never sounded the same since.

BoonDoc never sounded as tight when he went from the MPC to Logic (although I'm informed he still uses his MP at times).

These are just personal though.

not sure 100% anymore (due to lack of remembering the details) if chemical brothers went to software... but either way something happened where they just didn't do the badass big beat music anymore like the first album and second album too.

Not sure if its related but Almost any artist that was produced by Dilla lost that umph (Dilla's hw and talent i presume) after he died. Erykah badu for instance...

Prodigy, Basement Jaxx, Masters at Work and maybe RZA.

i could be wrong, but it sounds like two dudes who know their shit better than anybody else totally just jamming out on analog hardware.

whatever it is, it's amazing, and an incredible record, totally took me by surprise how awesome it was.

no I didn't know about it until last night when I decided to hit wikipedia t see if they dropped any new stuff..

BTW, I dont think the quality of their music has gone down... just the style from dig your own hole to surrender wasn't that impressive to me. Big beat all day!

Big Beat died a death soon after they dropped Dig Your Own Hole, so that's probably why they branched out into other areas.

truth told, using JUST an MPC has a stifling effect on my ability to write melodies.
it has a way positive effect on my ability to create tones and atmospheres by using the MPC as a synth.

just look at my song "Forlorn Hope" - 99% all mpc. no extra synths (if i remember correctly) just some extra texture layered in DAW.

then compare to "Cuckoo." all melodies but main guitar sample in the beginning are played from vsti. much more musical, less grainy.

one is not better than the other.

i thought surrender was pretty awesome but after that they are kind of hit and miss.

however further is a candidate for my favorite chemical brothers record ever.

Chemical Brothers are long time Logic and Pro Tools heads. I think they started on Cubase though. Either way they have always used software and hardware.

you are right it's likely a mix of all - but the tracks themselves sound pretty filthy and analog.

i definitely dont doubt logic / pt for tracking out and maybe sequencing - though i believe the mpc 3000 is still in their rig.

Yeah, like... you can always tell when a track is a chemical brothers track IMO (historically speaking, I dont know if the new album or material is like that)

You could be right though, it may not have been any transition to software at all but just a genre style change (or so to speak) ... their early work was filled with breaks and rugged synths.. the newer stuff seemed less like that, just as slick and maybe even put together even better... but cleaner more predictable melodies and synth styles...

I dunno, I owned all their CDs with the last one being push the button I think (I think that is the one with galvanize on it)
