Better to keep your 5k as a legacy unit and then decide whether to get the Ren or not or better yet the mpc studio.

He may be lamenting the fact that hardly any companies now make "professional" level pieces of equipment. Just compare the build quality on the Akai S1100 to what they make today, it's nowhere near it, but the S1100 cost a shed load of money when it came out, and not many people could afford it.
That's life - good stuff costs. Save up.

Even so, people can make plenty of good sounds on shit house equipment! Just not for very long.

I see the ren going for $1199.99 with free ipad app,the studio for $699.99.

The MPC500 was $1,299 MSRP but when it came out on the street, they were going for $699 at launch. I still say the Ren will go around $799 to $999, Studio will be $499 to $599 and the Fly $299 to $399. Street prices.

I dont get it... what exactly is there for you to be mad about driving in a camry? that the price wasn't as high as the lexus's? .. I dont get the analogy... maybe it's because I am not a fan of toyota so I dont follow the company?

$1,499 or anything close to that is way too much for a controller. I saw a used MPC 4000 at GC in mint condition for $799, a used MPC 5000 for $1,100 and even a Beat Thang for $850 (all US$). All of those units operate as stand alone beat machines but can also be used as controllers. Akai better price their new units competitively or they will remain on the shelves while their competition cashes in. We all benefit in the end because of the competition:)

That's £981 for the UK heads according to Googles' latest exchange rates... very, very expensive for what it is IMO. I'd like to see about the following in UK prices:

Ren: £650
Studio: £450
Fly: £150

Maschine is £479. So the Studio really needs to be around that mark, with the Ren peaking at £700 maximum, otherwise I don't think it will shift. Given that it only seems to have an extra interface and some more assignable bits. But I don't think that would make a huge impact on your average beat-maker anyway who probably already owns an interface and a cheapo MIDI controller.

Fly shouldn't need to be more than £200 at the absolute most, otherwise once you figure in the cost of an iPad it's starting to build up a little. Of the three it's my favourite.

Studio is the one to watch in terms of most sales I think. If they could undercut Maschine by even £50 I think it would be a really great result for Akai.
