Beat Thang has the computer built in, plus can be used as software alone with MIDI controller. Plus it's a new design, instead of just fronting the name and looks of an old cult classic. Plus it has "blang" and "bling" buttons instead of "vintage mode", and more lights. Oh, and the Thang can be worn on your chain.

If that AJ guy ends up with the last laugh on this one, I'm gonna be pissed. You sorta described the machine I was looking for Akai to announce (sans the chain part).

Beat Thang was promising. I had hope for it when it was first announced. Everyone got distracted by the ridiculousness of the image, not seeing what was underneath. But for those who just wanted a tool, not to join a club, Beat Kangz didn't matter much. I thought it was nice that Aja and others involved actually wrote here. Akai is pulling the same kind of marketing tactics, but they aren't even here to answer some questions. Beat Kangz brought it home, and made it fun, even when everyone was taking turns enjoying the public beatdown.

Akai had access to a history of established tech. There's already the battery-powered 500, and 1000/2500/5000, which all have USB. I don't know the technicals, but the first thing I would've been doing is talking to the engineers to see if it's possible for existing MPC machines to use the USB port for communications, not just acting as an external drive. If it were possible, with a firmware change, I'd start a software project to build what people need to allow them to interface the MPC with software, in a deeper way than just triggering MIDI.

Then, after a year or two, there'd be something built, that was designed around people's actual needs, and they'd be invested in it because they'd participate in providing feedback and testing frequent beta releases. At that point, the hollow MPCR would be released, and it'd work with the same software. It would be very low priced, since you'd bring your own PC. But people who spent more money would have the MPC that could work with the software, or standalone. Then once all that is rolling, with the software mature, and the new MPC controller selling to bring more people into the software, then I'd release the next lineup of MPCs, with the latest embedded technology, fast CPU, SDHD, USB 3.0, etc.

But it's like no one directing anything has any direction anymore. Aja seemed to inherit power because his dad was successful, and Numark has this power because Akai was successful. But the originals aren't around. It's like fans were at a show, and the originals left, leaving some fans to take the stage. They speak big, and bob around, but don't really know what to do.

beat thang is a fail it came to late props to them for getting it out but the execution was still a bit to gawdy.

it has good sounds and i seen a video with mike kalombo where they making fire but i dont like the software it looks clonky both the hardware and software.

this mpc hardware looks fly and with solid build quality i can see the doing a black version of the controller which will look sickamore.

i think the beat thang marketing team works for akai now...


jahrome and aja may just be the same guy...

worst thing about beat tang is design... man i can't think to spend that money for that.
basically the ren isn't that much better though imo.
lucky the mpc studio looks nicer, some chinese style in the whells on the left but ok, that's not a beat tang!

but the os dont look to sleek and some of them buttons look a bit clumsy

and the price point is awful when they can deliver that shit for for about 600USD and tone down some of the garish elements of it.

I hate how the click sounds too much like an instrument. It's like it has a "tune" to it that clashes with the chords the dude is playing. Kinda throws you off. I don't notice this on Maschine, and definitely not on the MPC!


EDIT: I think it's mainly cause the click changes pitch at the start of every bar! Why do they do that?

the design is so much over the top....i can't see it as a serious tool....

but maybe i'm just too white for it....

maybe i'm even too white for mpc's all in all these days.....
if i would have no idea what we're talking about here, i could think, mpc is for old school hip hop only....

well so you know which click is 1...

I would have thought you could change the metronome sound effect... or what ever. Sometimes they sound like an 808 rim shot sound or something.
