i personally really like the line 6 - the green one.

really great looper built in on top of superb effects and most importantly ease-of-use.

I'd say go with some odd / boutique / vintage unit rather than getting a rather faceless rack unit that promise to cover all bases and emulate this and that down to it's last component. Get some stuff that sounds / seems exciting, find out what it's strong points are, see if you feel the need to get something to supplement it's weak points.
Continue like that and soon you'll have a nice little setup with hopefully more individuality than some all-in-one PA-solution from one of the monopoly merchers of the business.

Check ebay and forums for anything out of the ordinary and odd looking, feel what you resonate with and take some chances. If you get something that doesn't really do it for you, but if it's an interesting or rare second hand unit you'll most likely be able to sell it without much monetary loss.

good advice. i'm not really looking for any all in one wonder piece. but unfortunately i dont know much about effects units. i like how the moog delay sounds but they dont make them any more. I try to emulate what I've heard on records when playing my synth and nothing sounds close to the warm smooth delays i've heard on old records. the moog delay did in the vids i saw.

anything like that would be dope. analog sweetness smooth but can be trippy if needed.

...+1 for the green line 6 delay modeler stomp box....

it's full of really good emulated delay classics...

and with it's knobs for realtime spinning....
it's stomper butts for tapping tempo and tough treatment...
and the built in looper, with reverse and halftime...

it's an instrument of it's own......

I have a Watkins Copicat, it's very temperamental and the motor always seizes up. But it literally sounds like nothing else I've got. (I only have Ableton's delay anyway, but you get my point).

I hadnt realized before but i guess the sound i'm looking for is the tape echo sound. re-201 or something similar

I have the reissue of the space echo - the *digital* re-20 twin pedal.

If you want "that" sound, you gotta go OG RE-201 like the ebay link you posted.

This comes very close, and is about half the price. Plus no tapes to deal with.

This vid is a little bit talky - but he walks you through it pretty well.

yo Buddy imma peep that vid link.... yo is this you http://www.cratekings.com/buddy-maxwell ... -download/

Bollyhood? if so how can I get the dl link ... i know its been a couple years.

EDIT------>
one of the owners of the original RE-201 says the RE-20 is not quit as nice with the crazier spacier sounds and that it sounds kind of digital with higher pitch sounds.

.....if the line 6 sounds that good?

well, a real tape echo is a real tape echo....and they all sound different...because of the tape.....the motors....the rec and play heads....
these old roland echo stations are beautyful....but in most cases, not in good condition anymore....

and hell, yeah, the line 6 got also the two roland classic tape delays on board....
and as i said, the emulation is very good.....it's the closest thing to the orignal that i know so far....
specially when it comes the the point to tweak the sound in realtime with both hands on four knobs.....
