I been doing some research on this since Im looking to pick one up to track out the mpc to and also be able to use the ipad as sound module and wanted to share some interesting findings.

"Any class compliant device should be recognised by the iPad, pretty much the same way they are recognised in Mac OSX..no drivers needed all part of the OS."
I've also found out that Tascam 800 will work with iPad using the camera kit. It'd be cool if we could get other interfaces tested and add to the list
Some differences I'd like to point out between this Tascam 800 and Alesis I/O dock
Tascam - more versatile piece, more inputs.
Alesis I/O dock - charges iPad while being used, and has Video-Out- rca type.
Tascam 800
Features
Provides 8 audio inputs and 4 audio outputs (two analog, two digital) plus one MIDI input and output for a Windows or Macintosh computer
Can be used as a standalone microphone/instrument/line preamplifier
Up to 96kHz sampling rates at 16/24-bit resolution for superb recording quality
Built-in DSP mixer for flexible routing and monitor mixing
2 mic/instrument inputs with XLR/TRS combo connectors on front
4 mic/line inputs with XLR/TRS combo connectors on rear
Stereo digital input and output (SPDIF, coaxial)
48-volt phantom power available on each mic input
Input level control and signal/overload LEDs on each analog input
Analog stereo output (RCA)
2 headphones outputs (3.5mm and 6.3mm)
Separate controls for output level and headphones volume
USB 2.0 equipped (also supports USB 1.1)

It's possible to record 8 separate inputs simultaneously with MultiTrack DAW on an iPad. You'll need the Camera Connection Kit from Apple to supply the USB connection for the audio interface.
You'll also need iOS5 or later on your iPad for recording 8 tracks at once.
The Tascam US-800 works great and has low noise:
The unit has 6 phantom powered mic inputs, and 2 digital inputs for a total of 8.
Thats 8 mono tracks or 4 stereo tracks or any combination of mono and stereo. The only constraint is that stereo tracks are paired to sets of 2 contiguous mono tracks. i.e:
Stereo A uses Mono 1 and Mono 2
Stereo B uses Mono 3 and Mono 4
Stereo C uses Mono 5 and Mono 6
Stereo D uses Mono 7 and Mono 8
When you plug the Tascam US-800 into the Camera Connection Kit, you should get a popup for a second which displays some info on the new hardware:
(8x2) means that eight inputs and 2 outputs are detected and working.
To select which inputs are used for a track, use the spinner control on the large Arm button:
This spinner control will scroll through all the possible inputs available when the interface is connected and working. The possible inputs with this hardware configuration are:
Mono 1,
Mono 2,
Mono 3,
Mono 4,
Mono 5,
Mono 6,
Mono 7,
Mono 8,
Stereo A,
Stereo B,
Stereo C,
Stereo D
