I only know what the video shows. He said circuits before AD/DA conversion are indentical to the MPC 3000. He also said Bruce Forat consulted on the MPC Ren's design.

I'm not that bothered about name-dropping from Akai to be fair. I just want to know as much as possible about how these products work based on what they're telling us.

I don't know much about this but surely all that's left then is the amplification?

AD ---> Processing/software stage ---> DA ---> Amplification ---> Outputs.

I hope they can give further details as to which circuit they've included from the 3000 and how it affects the sound.

I didnt even think of that???

Hmmm I could possible save myself a ton of money if I could use my 2500.

Thats a possibility if the software comes out good.

Its definitely a possibility and more. Im sitting here right now constructing kits in a VST drum machine and transferring them across to my 4k. I can trigger the real deal or the virtual one with the exact same kits set on the exact same midi note numbers. I can programme from the MPC and record in to the VST in real time, or simply transfer the midi file in 2 seconds from the MPC, or I can do it the other way around using some of the VSTs more esoteric programming functions.

Come to think of it, isnt this what Ren does, except I have the best of both worlds  8) . As I think about the MPC Ren and its functions I have come to the conclusion there is absolutely nothing I cant do with the 4k and a VST (in the way I'm setting it up) - VS the MPC Ren. I mean nothing at all.

If I only had something like an MPC2000, Ren would be a certain purchase. But Ren is not a certain purchase for me. I dont gain much, but I suspect I will lose something becasue ultimately none of my software synths can come close to my hardware in terms of punch/sound, and I dont see how Ren will be any different to be perfectly honest. Ten years of working exclusively in the box using VSTs has taught me a few things about software and how it sounds.

Ren will be fantastic for many I have no doubt about that, so this is not a pooh pooh on the Ren. It is by far the best drum machine controller out there.

youre not bogged down by about 50 different menus to get to one parameter....

PRICELESS!

This is the game changer!! I'M IN

Saint Joe, do you have any idea if plugin names/ parameters will show up on the display like Maschine? as I'd like to control Komplete 8 with the REN hardware.

there is a page that shows all 16 knobs with their parameters next to them. I can't say exactly how it will look because there were no plugins on the machine they were running on for me to test that.

But like the mixer and such, I imagine it will have the knobs listed in rows of 4 with a space next to each for the parameter it's controlling, and you can page through sets of 16 knobs.

when you have a plugin loaded and you go to PROG EDIT, the 16 knobs automap to the plugin. the names of each parameter are shown on the hardware screen, and on the computer screen. these parameters are gotten directly from the plugin, sort of like novation automap. you can rearrange the parameters in any order. by pressing F1-F6, you can switch to up to 6 banks, giving you 96 parameters total.

How do the vst parameter values displayed by the Ren controller relate to what's shown on the actual VST GUI? For example, on Maschine, when I load a Sonnox Limiter, the attack ranges from 0.5ms-1.04ms. However, the Maschine reads everything in percentage. So say I want a .15ms attack, I have to set Maschine to a certain percentage, which varies hugely depending on the parameter you are adjusting, which basically requires you to look at the screen to see the exact ms value, in this case is something like 35%. Parameters that are just simple On/Off, Maschine also displays these in % value; 0-49% being off and 50-100% being on. Will the Ren read in the same value formats as the actual VST, or will it be in percentage like Maschine does?

It'll pull the actual value from the VST. the VST reports the value to the software, and when you touch the knob it will display the actual value on the hardware.
