After Nym's first post in this thread, it's now really about two different questions that I have conflicting answers for...

1) "How many of you would like the MPC Ren/Studio load JJ OS programs and Projects?"

Would I like the new series to be compatible with JJ? Sure...I have a 1000 with JJ- that would be neato torpedo. :D

2) "Should JJ release his code to Akai?"

If I were him, I can't say that I'd put all my hard work in jeopardy like that... :? (this ofcourse depends on the final agreement struck between both sides)

Might be missing something here, but I thought files like PGM etc were pretty easy to read and dissect, which is why we have lots of PGM making programs like MPC Editor, Blue Box etc, and why Maschine can import PGMs. I wouldn't have thought having OS access would be needed.

Perhaps someone with suitable expertise could chime in here?

Akai would need the program/project format/spec....not the actual OS. Its in the MPC Ren forum, they said JJ would know what they are talking about. Without the spec, it is not going to happen.

Saint Joe and Flux asked for this support for JJ OS users. Dan Gill said he wouldn't have any problem looking into it.

yeah the program file spec is a lot less involved than the OS, that should be made clear in the discussion here. we're not talking about handing the OS over.

though there will certainly be features in jjos that won't carry through. luckily, they're not very important ones imo.

This is the same for support of legacy MPCs. Older MPCs have features current MPCs don't have. So these functions will be ignored. For example, MPC 3000 and 4000 can assign 2 MIDI channels or 2 Programs per track. if the MPC Ren goes by the MPC 5000 spec, it will have to ignore the additional MIDI channel and program.
