Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By pchv Thu Jan 26, 2012 9:16 pm
Got my 2kxl off ebay about a month ago, and I`m wondering if I have been ripped off or if I`m just doing something wrong.
Sometimes the end of a sequence will be erased without me wanting it. It just goes silent for the last two bars for example. Is this a common noob thing? Is there something I`m doing that I might not be aware of? I have been using mpc 3000 for a couple of years, so I`m not totally new to the Mpc world, but this is really strange.

Have you checked your time signature?

Yes, it`s 4/4. Trying to reinstall the OS now. Maybe it helps.

more details on exactly what you are doing would help.

sometimes if you copy / paste a bar it will add bars to the end.

It can happen at any time. I have the Mpc synced to PT with midi beat clock. If I for example have a sequence that lasts 100 bars to fit a song in PT. I will erase the hihat in a certain part, pressing the Erase key while pressing the Hihat-pad in overdub mode.
These are some of the things that can happen:
- The hihat doesn`t get erased. When I press play in PT before this spot, it plays normally throughout the song, but still with the hihat. If I start the song at a later point, it`s silent. The Mpc runs, but no sound. I know it`s there, because if I start the song earlier, everything plays.
OR
- Everything from this point will be erased. Total silence, but the bars are still there.
OR
- The whole freekin sequence goes silent.

Well if anyone will take his/her time to read this and give some advice, I would be extremely grateful. :D

Ok, now I noticed another thing. I have a long sequence running synced to pro tools. I started recording a hihat at bar 55. When I play back, I have to start the sequence at bar 55 or a point earlier in order to hear the rest of the sequence. If I start playing back at, say bar 60, the mpc will run, but with no sound. :?: :?: :?:

Sounds like you need to look into note on and note off events in your sequencer step edit function. If you stop your sequencer after a note off and then relocate your start position your sequencer is stuck in that note off event
until it hears a note on event and vice versa. Step slowly through your step edit screen at right before the point where things happen that you don't like and you'll find them in there. Remember you have to be on the correct track and correct timing resolution in order to see the events that take place.

IE, if you recorded something at 32t and your timing right now says 1/4 there is probably no way you'll see it in step edit, you'll hear the recorded sample played when you play past it but you won't see it, gotta view it 32t in that case.

Hey!
I tried Step edit mode. Everything from the point of record is blank....
Strange ting is, when I play back from this point or earlier, the rest of the seqs plays neatly. But not when playing from after this point.

Update: I saved the corrupted sequence, and loaded it again. Then it just plays until the point of record and goes silent after that.

now there are known issues with midi clock and daws and mpcs. i have experienced some weird seq jumping around so maybe that is playing a part?

i dont know im having a hard time understanding what is going on...a video would always help.

Yes, sorry I can`t provide a video at the moment, but I can try to narrow the problem down a bit. I understand it sounds a bit confusing :)

When I`m in the middle of a sequence and do an overdub (either recording something or erasing something), everything beyond the point of record will be lost. It will play back if I start the sequence earlier, but not when I press play after the point of record.
In Step Edit Mode the events are not there anymore. Blank.
(This doesn`t happen all the time, but often enough - at least five times during a session)

Maybe you`re right concerning the midi issue cause I have only experienced it connected to PT, but this was never a problem with my old mpc 3000.

Spoke to a service guy today, although he didn`t know this machine very well, he was quite sure it`s an issue on the main board. Any ideas on this? (I have one at hand on the internet)

honestly it sounds like you are doing a 'record' vs an overdub. :?

is that an accurate description? that overdub is behaving like 'record' in that it actually wipes the notes when it starts recording?

dose it erase the sounds on all tracks or just the track you are supposedly 'overdubbing' on?
also, if you are 'overdubbing'...are those new notes still getting in to the track?

i mean, i guess you could have gotten an mpc that had been re-screen printed and overdub/record were accidentally swapped?!

if im still misunderstanding, sorry.

No problem :D
It`s not like "Record", because it erases everything after the part that has been overdubbed too. I.e. the rest of the sequence. Not sure about the tracks. Only used one track.

it would be worth it to try with 2 tracks...hit overdub on track one and see if track 2 gets erased...just so you'd know.

also im not sure if record erases the entire rest of the track or if it works like a 'punch in'.

sanity check - on my xl rec is on the left and overdub is on the right. is yers the same?

Thanks for your trust, but I`m not insane  ! They are the same here.
Will check the two things you mentioned there when I`m back on the mpc tomorrow. Thanks for your help so far!
