Pattern confusion

JJ OS 2XL 3.14

I can't quite make sense of the two pattern options. Searching here and reading the manual is a bit of a maze since JJ OS is constantly changing.

First, the pattern to pad assignments I can make from the Main window, are these global and independant from sequence chosen? So I'll have to decide globally if I want a pad to play a sound or pattern during performance?

Secondly, the line patterns in Grid edit; if I press LineEDIT [F2] I can edit the pattern velocity, duration etc. That's clear, but can I assign these to pads in any way to use during performance?

Also, in Grid edit. Pressing View [F3] I get a menu similar to LineEdit but that's not related to actual patterns is it? It's a more detailed way of editing the grid right?

yeah the two pattern things you are talking about are different. The patterns in loop mode are not the same as the other pattern mode for the Pads. It is global setting, BUT you have 10 separate SETS of these global Pad settings, from memory. So even when playing you can switch the SETS -hit window button when you have cursor over the PAD number is - A01:blah which is down the bottom of the main screen.
Grid edit and pattern is to edit yes, as you asked. BUT you can make any track a pattern. So hit mode when in grid or main screen and you will see the ToPatrn [F4].
Do this after you make a sequence that you want to make a pattern with, and you get a stored pattern, that you can name. THEN you just use a different SET, or bank and make a PAD setting to pattern. Your pattern can then be chosen, pitched looped ect. So yes this will allow you to trigger patterns live. It is very useful and effective. You can trigger MIDI CC information as well, not just trigger MPC sounds. So, for instance I can make a track that just contains MIDI CC 74 info only, no notes, that is a sweep of a synths filter envelope. then every time i hit that pad that has been set to the that saved pattern it will sweep an external synths filter. great fun as you can loop it, trigger any time and record as well. Can it be aligned to the time correction grid like Note repeat? If not I'm not going to have much use of it live unfortunately.

Also, can I (also like Note repeat) make the pattern playback momentary so it stops when I release a pad instead of looping or playing to the end?

I haven't looked in to all sides of this new pattern mode yet but I believe developing and combining line patterns and arpeggiator including time alignment would make a greater improvment for live improvisation than what I can make out of this. Maybe I'm wrong.

if time correct is on yes i believe it does. tempo is set by sequence. If you look, you will see loop/one shot and tune options.

No, timing correct does not affect this. It's not aligned.
Arpeggio is not time aligned either.
Note repeat is always time aligned.

Yes, loop and one shot is great but momentarily (what you'd get with "note on" on a regular sample pad) would be great too.

there you go torsig to the rescue there, letting you know patterns are not triggered to TC. Just hit pads in time, works for me. I do not use TC this way ever so was not sure

Yeah, timing issues is always a matter och playing skills and genre.
Some genres requires spot on while others requires groove and deviations.

I hardly ever use arpeggios or other automatic playing if it's not time aligned.
On older analog instruments, if you synced the arpeggiator or similar to gate it was always time aligned. That's what I'm used to so I don't like this tempo-synced-but-not-time-aligned stuff that Waldowrf, JJ and others have implemented.
