Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

Hi there,

first post here, hope it's gonna be useful.

I just bought a 2000xl from a guy that installed a flash drive on it, but doesn't work as he didn't updated to 1.14 or 1.2. But LED is on.

I got the floppy drive with it but doesn't seem to work as even the LED doesn't light up.

So I got to replace it with another floppy drive I guess. Little shop in my neighborhood got some from PC's to sell around 5$ but not sure if they are compatible. Are they?

They also got an internal ATAPI ZIP drive, and I wonder if this could be compatible, but I then got to buy another ZIP drive for an old computer I don't have.

Another solution is to get an external ZIP drive I could use for updates. I can use ZIP for updates right?

What do you think is the best way doin it?

thanks for helping me!
:D

So the card reader doesn't work at all in it? IMO install another card reader and don't mess with floppy or Zips drives. They'll go bad after time due to the moving parts.

well you need that OS 1.20 for the cf drive right? so.. may I suggest installing the IDE zip drive in your computer temporarily to transfer the OS onto it and then use that to update the mpc. then install the cf reader again.

Maybe the data ribbon is backwards, open it up and check it, red wire on the ribbon should be situated towards the power plug.

PC floppy drives are fine with 2kxl, for only $5 it wouldn't hurt to buy one and try would it?

They also got an internal ATAPI ZIP drive, and I wonder if this could be compatible, but I then got to buy another ZIP drive for an old computer I don't have.
The connector on the 2kxl motherboard is internal IDE, 40 pin connector. Go here and look at the pics.

Thanks for the fast replies guys

I'll open it and check if the ribbon cable is ok, but i think flash drives doesn't work with OS1.11.But that's a costless try.

Then I'll buy the floppy drive for 5$. Can be worth it.

If that's still not fine, i'll deal with ZIPs or any other external drive type.

I'll report my tries.
Thanks!

Ok so I just bought 2 floppy drives for 5$..(crazy spending  )
I tried both in the mpc, but I still have a "no floppy device" message when shift+load. There is only a continuous clicking sound each second. Just like when a hd is plugged on a not enough powerful usb.
No LED either. I checked the IDE and power cable but everything seems ok.

any idea someone?!

thanks

Yeah you should double check connections like really push some of them in thats what i did when my cf card reader wouldnt work lol... eventually after messing with it it worked but i agree with the 2nd reply about buying an external zip drive joint and just doing it like that... they come in handy anyway i mean i'll still keep and probably use mine just incase antyhing goes wrong (touch wood it doesnt) with my cf reader.

yeah hehe!

just had to fix the IDE cable that was a bit messy.

THANKS GUYS :D

I'm ready to load 1.14 from floppy, but I'll have to load 1.2 as says the notice from mpcstuff...
So how do I load 1.2 from floppy when akaipro states it's for mcd and ZIP only?! Is there any 1.2 OS for floppies?

thanks

When you get another $20-$30 you could install a card reader. I had some issues with mine other than the card reader, there were some problems with the mother board but once it was fixed, and I had installed the card reader (see the sticky topic for that) this machine is awesome. The added memory on that card saves tons of time and energy. I have yet to try the little mpc2kxl programmer that is downloadable. But a floppy disc has barely enough space to hold one sound.
