MPC2000 Data Wheel Question

I've had my 2000XL for about 10 years now, and as much researching that I've done on other models, I just noticed about five minutes ago that the data wheel on the 2000 is different from that of the one on the XL (besides size and color). I noticed that there is an outer part to it. Is this a functioning feature or just a physical feature? Do it do something separate from the inner portion?

Ho does it function differently from the XL and other models?

When editing samples... turning the outer wheel moves the cursor from the ones place, to the tens place, to the hundreds place, etc. While spinning the inner wheel changes the value in that place.
