Frustrated at MPC workflow....should I return back to softwa

Yup! Check out the "beat making..."-book and once you're comfortable with the machine install JJOS (you could install the free one right-away)! Also check out 1k- and JJOS-forums on this site.

honetly Id advise one of the following

1. take your time and give it more time to learn the MPC and get use to its work flow. HW is a different ballgame than SW no matter if its reason vs mpc or logic vs MV8800. give it time

or

2. take it back and wait for MPC Ren this summer. if you've been using reason for 8 years a few more months wont hurt. you'd probably be the prime candidate to use the ren and its computer integration

I have the 1000, moved up from the 2000xl. So far it's more than I can really digest in a month, especially with JJOS. My plan right now is to master the 1000 and JJOS while slowely saving up for a 2500 + jjos or 5000 for the more features + bigger pads. The 1000 is a great MPC imho. It's super portable, has great pads once upgraded, able to install an internal HD so no added features. I can show up with just my MPC and a small bag of cables and do everything I need, all in a light backpack. I generally take my 1000 to work and make beats during lunch lol. Also the 1000 is a good middle ground, has the 4 outs so you can still record out if you want to go the MPC route and get serious with it. USB connection so you can do reason to MPC if you want, really you have a ton of options in a small portable pack. Let us know how you like it.

Working with the mpc forces you to work another type of workflow. Eventhough there's enough room to create your own workflow, some ways of working are just impossible with the mpc, like applying as much as FX to your beats and sounds like Reason allows you to. Or relying almost completely on the grid editor, which of course is far more limited with mpc. (The grid editor is also not the main reason why people buy the mpc of course)

You just need to get used to it and have to find and develop your own workflow with it. It will take some time, and might seems hard at times. Especially because you've been making beats with Reason for 8 yrs. Def. a good decission to try the mpc 1000, with one of the earlier JJOS versions (Free one and jjos1) it's maybe the most accesible and userfriendly mpc nowadays imo. Good luck with it.

No just started hardware for a 7/8 months or so..

i dunno, man, i think jjos2xl's grid edit beats any other grid edit. i've tried a number of DAWs and they're all too mouse driven. jj's grid edit is sublime - DRUM and MIDI. it's just so fast and tactile.

i am considering gong the other way in some respect for MIDI. Using a DAW to edit stuff i have done on MPC. But as Nym has stated, I have yet to find software that gives me the same response and ease of use JJOSXL does in grid edit mode. Maybe i am too used to it now, but every other sequencer on computers feels clunky now

Thanks man. I just bought a used MPC 1000 with JJ os and an internal hard drive off ebay....should be arriving in a week or so. I will definitely keep you updated. I like that there are so many resources on the MPC 1000 on youtube and the web in general.

And good idea, I am gonna consider bringing my MPC to work to mess around with on lunch LOL

I felt the same way three years ago man. A few days? It took me TWO YEARS before I felt comfortable on my 4000, and that's using it every single day. You will get it, just keep at it. Eventually you will get fast at using it, and you won't have to worry about how to do something and you can focus more on your music. Good luck!
