2000xl synth keyboard hookup midi problems

having trouble recording basslines/melodies over my drum tracks. ive got midi in and out connected to my korg 01/w. i can record some synth but the annoying thing is the mpc drum sounds play on some of the keyboard keys. when i play back the beat you can here odd keyboard keys playing at the same time as the kicks snares and hats. i want to stop the drum sounds going to the keyboard keys and just record a beat then be able to record my korg over the top. i suppose im looking for someone to tell me the exact way to set up the mpc for midi. a walkthrough would be great right now......peace

yo padlock thanks man you made my month it was as simple as that ... now i can record the korg on my drums. I have another question though. can you record different keyboard sounds on the same sequence.. for example a synth bassline then change to a grand piano for some chords. when i change the sounds coming from the keyboard the mpc changes everything ive done so far to the new sound. so my bassline is sounding good then i change the keyboard to piano to record some notes and all of a sudden the bassline is now coming out as piano. you seem to know your s**t man hope you can help me......thanks bud

cheers for the advice lampdog.. problem is im new to keyboards and dont know how to program the 01w. im going to download an online manual to try and to figure out how make the keyboard send out signals on different midi channels. does 16-part multi timbral mean upto 16 different programs playing at the same time?? on the menu you can select which midi channel you want the 01w to output on but unsure how to assign different programs to different channels. i will persevere and let you know how i get on...really do appreciate the help these forums are superb... thanks man

definitely read the manual, you will learn a lot.

16 part multi-timbrality DOES mean it can play 16 different programs at once.

now the part where you are confused is that you probably dont care about the keyboard sending out on 16 different channels, you want it to receive 16 channels from the mpc.

once you set up a multi-timbral program, you can assign different channels in the mpc per track, 1-16 and these will play the particular program assigned to that channel.

now as for getting the keyboard to play it, the mpc is by default set up to take a midi input and then route it to the channel that is selected per track. so the issue here would be finding the option in your keyboard to disable 'local control'...which simply means the keyboard wont trigger itself, it will only send a midi note out (which will be intercepted by the mpc and sent back to the keyboard - which will play the note).

otherwise, when you play the keyboard you will play whatever the keyboard is set to as well as the program assigned to the currently selected track in the mpc.

does that make sense?

thanks for the quick post. i am starting to understand... i know how to turn local control off on the keyboard but am stuck at the point off setting up a multi timbral programme. most of my work before the keyboard consisted of a 6 second looped sample which i chopped for the main part of the song and used the loop for the hook with my own drums throughout. i only think i would use 2 or 3 extra midi channels for the keyboard stuff at the most so im hoping that will make it a bit easier to set up a multi tim prgrm.... learning all the time thanks and peace

how many channels you use probably wont make a difference really in how hard it is to set up a multitimbral program...sometimes these are called 'performances' or 'banks' ... just look through that manual im sure it's spelled out in plain engrish.
