Im just wondering how will any person route their sound, because I cant wrap my head around this theory. Your sound will actually come from the outs on the Controller, which is actually coming from the internal sounds inside of your computer ie (vst's/samples/drums). Its like would you then route the master outputs of the hardware controller, back into a usb/firewire recording interface, which is connected to the same computer the sound is originating from, and the same hard drive the original file is originally stored on ..... I just figured it out, the outs on the controller replace your interface right......... but what if you have keyboards hooked up via midi to a mixer to the recording interface, you'll have to record that into your daw some how right, therefore you can't get rid of your interface, this is something thats just been stirring my mind, something I've been thinking about. I mean Im thinking of different ways to do it now and there are ways to have all that gear hooked up, but has anyone else thought of this situation were going to run into.

took the words right outs my mouth ... thats why i keep asking for a video on sound not .. the lights / latency ..

I've thought of this too. I didn't want to be the first one to ask this question..

I would want to hear how this is going to be done also. How are people going to utilize the Ren's output? Every time I start to imagine it, it doesn't make sense. Or it's not very practical.

It's really simple. You can do it one of two ways.

1. You can replace your original interface and connect the Ren straight to your monitors. This will work good for guys that just make beats and don't really require tracking to a DAW.

2. You can use it with your current interface just like a hardware MPC. Just plug it in and go! All the 'sound originating from the same computer/hard drive' stuff is irrelevant. The only time the sound files are being accessed is the one time the Ren is triggering them. The rest is just sound being passed through audio inputs and outputs.

So to try to help you understand, I'll explain how I'll have mine:
I'll have the Ren coming into the Aux input on my 003. This Aux input passes audio through to my speakers as long as the interface is powered on and the Aux button is pressed. It doesn't matter if the sound is coming from my MPC 2500/2000XL/turntable etc, or from a YouTube video playing on the same computer via my on-board sound card.

So with the Aux button on and the Ren application open, and sound I trigger from the hard drive will go out the Ren main outs, into my 003 Aux input, and right out the 003's main outs to my monitors.

Now if I want to actually track the Rens outputs, I simply open Pro Tools, make a new audio track and set my audio track input to channels 7/8. The 003 has a feature where in addition to routing the Aux input signal directly out to the monitors, I can route it to channels 7/8 of the 003, then out the master of Pro Tools. Simple.

Your interface doesn't need to have an aux input, but it's just how I route my external gear into Pro Tools. The actual 8 analog inputs of my 003 is being taken up by the 8-outs of my 2500. So everything else goes to a mixer and then out of that mixer into my 003's aux. So if your interface doesn't have an aux, you just use whatever inputs you use for your current MPC.

Even though the Ren is triggering sounds from a location on your hard drive, when you track those sounds into Pro Tools, Pro Tools is recording them to a totally different location on the hard drive. Doesn't matter whether the sounds are from the same or secondary hard drive. It's the same as if you were to track a Pro Tools virtual instrument, like Xpand, to an audio track within Pro Tools. Sure Pro Tools is triggering those Xpand samples from the same system, but it has no effect on tracking that Xpand sound to an audio track, which basically get's stored as an audio file on the same system.

Ideally, you should have at least 3 hard drives. One for your OS, one for your samples, and one for your DAW recordings. So your Ren app will operate from your OS drive, trigger samples from your samples drive, sound goes out the Ren outs, into your interface/DAW, and records to your audio drive. I personally only use two drives. I keep all my samples on the OS drive and record everything else to my audio drive. And this has worked fine for me.

Now being that I still have my system sound card still activated, I can run any system sounds into my interface, like internet, windows media player, itunes, etc. The Ren will be basically the same thing. Just another sound card.

1. For me, the MPC Ren's outputs will be connected to monitors. It will pretty much be my sound card. It's like using my hardware MPC as a self-contained unit. Everything stays in the box.

2. Another option for me is to dedicate 1 computer just for the MPC Ren. My 2nd computer could be dedicated to my DAW abd equipped with an AD/DA converter. I can run the outputs of the MPC Ren into this 2nd computer.

I see this as a very easy to grasp concept. Is it any different than using Pro Tools, a dedicated 2 channel AD/DA conveter, and a pad controller?

I MITE JUSTuse a imac just for my mpcr ( if i get one ) then run the outputs from thier to my avid omini .

Is an iMac powerful enough to run a bunch of VSTi's

Yeah, you can run it right into the two mic pre's on the front. Or if you wanna bypass the pre-amps of the omni and just have the straight up raw MPC sound, just use 2 of the 4 line inputs! It'll work perfect!

The only thing is though, I don't know how the omni works. The interface may only pass audio through if Pro Tools is open. So you may have to open Pro Tools every time you wanna use the Ren. Not sure though!

I think this is gonna be crazy for people who work on laptops. I see im gonna have to get a mixer, and a better interface than the 1 I currently have.

wait, this seems powerful for those who already have interfaces........no? Could you do something like this:

1.run mpc ren like you normal would a regular mpc (software wise that would mean run ren software standalone)
2.wire its outs and your other gears outs to your interface
3.control your other gear (synths and what not) via mpc ren midi (just like normal mpc)
4.sync mpc ren to your DAW via external midi cords (mpc ren midi in/out to your interface in/out)
5.record into your daw using your interface.

will this work?

basically the idea is that you need to run the outs of the controller to your interface to capture that mpc3000/60 emulation, correct? otherwise it might be faster to just export your tracks with the software or run the ren software as a vst within your daw - correct?

Hmmm,
i thought about routing too...,

routing the ren stereo outs to ins of another interface?
- in that case i have to track shit step by step... so no difference to the old mpcs (sync to daw .. and no individual outputs but the boosted 3k outs) bad solution for me.

stay in the ren and export every track out of the ren software?
- no 3k outs (maybe with resampling) + no audiotracks = no other hardware units (you can connect them over midi, but no audio tracks to record them)

something like rewire ren --> daw
no 3k outs but the possibility to track everything together out of the ren + connecting harware syths over midi to the ren and audio to the daw ( over my second audio interface??)
So 2 audio interfaces runnung same time? The ren interface and the normal daw interface..

The best thing for me would be to do everything in the ren software (beats + recording harware synths + recording vocals plus vocal edit) and then extract it on single tracks that i or somebody else can load in a daw or similar for mixing

So that were my thoughts about it (i tried to translate them from german to english), but there is no golden solution in my thoughts...

Would be nice if a smart akai guy would explain us how to extract our beats to our daw.
I think tracking out fast to the daw is one of the MAIN points to switch on the ren.

Yup! This is exactly what I was referring to. As for the laptop, if you dont care about that '3000 sound', I'm sure you'll be able to switch the driver in the options to use your built in sound card and speakers or use the driver for your current interface as the main outputs.
