Hello people, I've had my black mpc 1000 since 2008 and touch wood I haven't had any problems with it (still has the orginal tact switches inside, that's how good it's been :) ). The last week or so I've notice that it is running hotter then normal even when it's idle. I switched it off yesterday after a couple of hours because I was scared I might melt somethink inside.

I do clean it once a week with a dry lint free cloth and every 6 months I open it up and use a can of compressed air to gently blow out any dead skin, fluff, dust etc. It's always covered up when not in use, so I know that it isn't dirt that's the issue of why it might be overheating.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Tact switches last years, I have had 80's machines with originals still fitted :)

If your machine is covered when not in use chances are its better looked after than 99 %. Of mpc users.

Not being funny bro but taking your machine apart once a month is excessive and could actually do more harm than good.

Make sure the heat exchanges are connected to the pcb correctly (they could have been damaged)

Sorry, It should of been every 6 months, so I've edited. :oops:

I had a good route around last night inside it and I couldn't see anythink that was loose and smelt funny.

That's better ;)

This sorta thing can happen as a result of increased pull from the main power board.

Any recent unofficial upgrades or components fitted?

No, installed the 128mb ram expansion and a Toshiba MK1032GAX 100GB hdd when I first got my 1000, I uninstalled both last night to see if was either my ram or hard drive that may be causing the overheating. Both come back as a negative, wondering if the heat sinks may be at fault?

That's what I was getting at with my first reply :)

If your mpc is left on for long periods of time the heat sinks can suffer

However if a resistor inside the mpc is playing up, this can draw more power from supply... Hense more heat :/

I would start with checking the paths from your main power board
Eg
Power to motherboard
Power to screen
Power to cf
Ect

It's better to spend the time checking everything before you remove anything from your pcbs

If you get really stuck I do mpc repairs

Got a free evening tonight, so I'm going to take it all apart and reassemble it to see if that solves the problem.

If you have an electronic thermometer in your medicine cabinet, try taking a temperature reading. I know that sounds crazy. But it's worth it to note how hot the unit is running. If others can do the same and compare, it may be worthwhile noting as well.

After striping out my 1000, I notice that one of resistors on the ADDA pcb board had somehow worked it's way loose. So I re soldered it back on and hey presto it's no longer overheating! :D

Good work locating and resoldering that diode. Every once in a while, I've noticed this tends to be a problem. When the Pad Upgrade was released, a few PCBs had a diode that somehow didn't bond with the wave soldering process. Some of us simply reflowed the weak solder point and have had no problems. Considering that you're unit is an '08, I can fairly assess that there were problems in manufacturing with the wave soldering on many components (including the pad fix which was released that year). It's not really a wide-spread problem that I'm aware of. But working for an electronics company, I've seen this happen before. So it's worth noting the production date, based on my own experience in the field.
