It's interesting b.read my initial reaction was the same... damn the price. But as time has gone on I've realised how useful a piece the Tempest is. It has the analogue voices so there's nothing stopping you using it as a synthesizer of sorts. Whereas I think you'd struggle getting the same functionality from the Brute or the Taur, not to say that they aren't fantastic products in their own right... particularly at those prices. The Taur, slightly less so, but you get my point.
Coz the Monotribe is a beast man. Can get a little noisy if you really try and slam it through a hardware mixer for distortion, but that's part of the beauty in a sense. It's so limited with the step sequencer that it's actually great fun. Only killer for me was lack of a plug... my batteries ran out so quickly because I was playing with it for hours and hours.
EDIT: Regarding Tempest only thing I'd like is an audio in/thru to make use of the compressor in the realest of timezzz for external sources.
