it's not a mistake, it's a tool, use it or don't use to your advantage.

chopping breaks by setting the SLICE tool to 16 and not adjusting the start/end points
chopping hats that ring out and then using them on a beat with a slower tempo without detuning/looping
"falling down the stairs" fills
"drunken master" style (woulda-been dilla/madlib type, minus the coherency)
chopping/using only 1 kick, 1 hat, and 1 snare out of a break
dirty south drum fills. all of them. even if you've been doing this for twenny years.

nothing newbie about doing that.. i'd say that to think that it is so, is actually in itself a real newbie mistake, lol
biggest newbie mistake of them all is the belief that there are any specific rules you need to follow

Repeating the same barely acceptable 1 bar drum loop throughout the whole song. Son u ARE NOT Dr. Dre. At least have some change-ups to break the monotony of your lame drum programming.

Listen to a real drummer, they rarely hit the hats 1/8 note the whole time
another thing people do is chop a sample till they have nothing but little ambient 1 shots.

so what? If you made clear you're talking about "how to get a drumpattern sound like a real drummer" I would agree but there are people who don't want to sound like a real drummer.

sure, but a real drummer.. if good atleast, would not do such things just for the sake of it.. whats best for that particular track would be the highest priority if he knows what he is doing, and doing hihats outside of 1/8ths isnt always needed or whats best and depending on the track it can even defeat the purpose.. all about balance.... then there is other types of music that has full focus on the drums and rhyhtm, and then the more advanced you get with the patterns the more pleasing it might be to the listener.. where the attention to detail is much higher than anything you will hear in most music.. but that is a very specialised form of music and even though it is more advanced it doesnt mean it is better, or that a simpler groove is more newbie in comparison.. all about doing the right thing at the right time in the right place.. if you make a track that depends on its groove sucking you in and being hypnotic, then making changes or variations for the sake of it can break that spell
and the beauty of programming is that you can do things a drummer never could, and so personally and because i like to experiment a bit, i would not want to limit myself with an aim to always sound like a real drummer.. there is so much good music out there that wouldnt be the same if the artists aim had been to sound like a real drummer
edit: want to add that its very good for practice though, not necessarilly to always aim to sound like a real drummer, but trying to go beyond.. as the more flexible you get, the more control you have, and with more control you will get better at executing and performing the ideas you have, to better nail all those sweet spots.. and thats not just drum programming.. same goes for anything else.. its the reason a pianist might practice playing as quick as he can just to become more flexible and so he can use that skill when he really needs it in his music..

Not speaking on others, I'll leave that for the judges around here
, but my personal biggest problem as a beginner was making patterns too busy. That and lack of variation.

Why the F*ck Not??? R you saying you don't mind repetitiv drumloops as long as they're made by DrDre ..?.. But everyone else better keep switchin' things up ?!?
If it works .. it works.. Can be hypnotic.. maybe it only works for a minute or two. ( I love short mixtape-style-beats..)
There's no rules to personall taste. And that's all most of us go by when making our music.
