Why the F*ck Not??? R you saying you don't mind repetitiv drumloops as long as they're made by DrDre ..?.. But everyone else better keep switchin' things up ?!?
If it works .. it works.. Can be hypnotic.. maybe it only works for a minute or two. ( I love short mixtape-style-beats..)
There's no rules to personall taste. And that's all most of us go by when making our music.

Yeah but the first time i didn't use ''!!!!!!!!''

Besides it's much more poignant now dude mentioned the word hypnotic

My biggest newbie error is worrying about what other people think. The track in my sig is my second beat and has continual hats (well shakers) but it's not because i was being lazy or un-creative. I just didn't want them not to be audible at any point.

I used to do that, but the problem never was the beats being too busy, the human ear can pick up a lot of details.. The problem was not knowing how to tweak drums so that they fit in that kind of pattern.. Usually sloppy programming can make a beat sound more busy than a pattern that actually is more busy (its kinda all over the place dynamically and rhythmicall, less subtleties and so that steals attention and that leads to it appearing to be busy).. But the more you customise your hits to fit their place in a pattern, then usually you'll have more space.. And by doing this you can have a very complex pattern sound less busy and also more natural and fluid than a pattern where less attention may have been put into shaping the drumhits for that pattern

+2.

Check out this drum sequence, not 1 bar the same. (lol, ykwim)

But the kicks are.

Its sloppy recording, MPC couldnt handle it.

Lol u goofballs

I'm not saying ONLY Dre can make a repeat-worthy one bar loop,,,,

I'm just saying that few newbies can.

That's how I read it too.

Do u remember when Chronic 2001 came out? I refer u to this classic,,, which actually features a HALF-BAR drum loop, unchanged throughout the whole song.

Its not a 1/2 bar loop. Its a one bar loop. If you listen closely you'll see that the first snare is a few cents lower than the second snare. :D

Nothing wrong with short loops. Some of my favourite techno records have literally only got a kick and hi-hat. To nail that simplicity and keep a track rolling takes a lot of skill IMO. But that's not really relevant to noobs.

Biggest drum sequencing error I usually come across is people mistaking swing for bad timing.

Lol some of my old tracks just had bad timing, but then again it is questionable to swing. I think the error that most newbies will make is thinking that leaving quantize on will fix their mistakes in the verse, but the fact is when you have just the kick and the snare, it's often MUCH better to non-quantize the two. Hi-hats to me can be quantized, but that to me sounds too much like a machine doing work, and not enough like a real beat. You don't need your drums to sound like a real drummer is playing, but people need to understand that drummers aren't restricted to rock & roll, they can be hip-hop and whatever else they want to be.
