first you realise that yer 2kxl and yer macbook are from two very different time periods, and they are not made to work with each other in the uber-friendly single-option mac way.
midi over usb might work (have you even tried it?), but let me tell you, for transferring samples, just forget it. it's super slow, do you even have a program on yer macbook that will transfer samples via midi?
the reason your wave files aren't working is that they need to be 16-bit wave files - my guess is you are trying 24-bit files.
you can keep burning cds, or you can install a compact/sd card reader which is what most people do nowadays. bear in mind that half of these card readers will not work with a mac, as macs write hidden files to every drive that screw the mpc up.
also start to consider that every file you want to transfer to the mpc can only have 8 characters in the file name.
finally, consider if you love the xl enough to go through all this hassle, or if you should consider a more modern mpc. a lot of people do it this way, but it's definitely not geared towards a beginner in 2012.
if you do stick with it, put on yer thinkin cap and roll up yer sleeves and stick around, we'll do what we can to get you going
