MPC 3000 SCSI Problem

I have an MPC 3000 w/ OS 3.11, saving to floppies works fine. Acard 7720u 3.75 firmware, not sure of cf drive model yet.

Im trying to get a CF reader from JD working with my machine and have been having trouble. He has been great with helping and customer service but I am running out of options as there looks to possibly be an issue with the SCSI on my machine.

First card reader w/ SanDisk UltraII 4gb, card would format fine, but would hard lock my machine approx. 1 out of 3 times when trying to save. The other times it would save program ok. Tried the smaller size San Disk Ultra II 1gb as recommended by JD. The card was "new" from ebay but not in the original packaging, and would now get error ff10:

"The file (or entire disk) contans damaged data, change disks...".

So we exchanged the drive for another and get the same error, the 1gb card formats fine into partition A-Z. I am able to save/load sequences or all sequences to various partitions but when saving any .snd or .pgms I get error ff10.

I have checked the SCSI fuse (pin 25 to gnd for 5v term power) and get no voltage which would indicate a blown fuse, but the CF reader is set to provide termination power so theoretically it shouldnt matter? I have tried other SCSI IDs with the same result ff10 for snds or pgms.

Does anyone have any ideas what would cause SCSI errors when saving the larger files? It appears the drive works perfectly for formatting and saving small files such as seq but cannot save any snds (even .1sec) with the UltraII 1gb.


Any advice and input is sincerely appreciated! Ill be doing some more troubleshooting tonight.

I had exactly the same problem with the card reader supplied by JD. However... he was very helpful and was extremely quick at responding to questions and emails.

I didn't find a cure to it as I just sold the 3k shortly afterwards. I tried various different cards but in the end it was just not worth the time and money as the cf cards aren't particulary cheap in my country, and by the time you have bought 5, you are half way there to getting another drive.

It might be worth sending the drive back and getting a refund to be honest. Seed78 is the man to talk to, he is tinkering and playing about with a whole host of drives at the moment so I'm sure he could put you on to the best route to go in your questn for cf holyness lol.

You are just another statistic on an ever growing list of people who can't seem to get a reliable functioning scsi on a 3k.... I swear every week someone new pops up complaining of troubles.

FF48 Error would point to blown fuse.

FF10 is bad data on card.

I use Fujifilm CF and Kingston CF (both 1GB) with no issues. But I've had the FF10 with Sandisk.

Thanks for input so far people, I had the drive ready for return but wanted to be certain is wasnt my machine or card first, as im the type of person who doesnt like to be defeated by this stuff. Shostakovich, does your Kingston look like this? :



Also its worth noting, JD has said he has sold many san disk ultra 1gb cards for use with his readers.

Yes, I'm not saying it's 100% the card's fault. I've had FF10 with one of these once but only because of poor conversion WAV > SND. Didn't like it, needed to reformat it. I use both these cards at the same time no problem. JD sold me my drive and his support was great.

I totally dissassembled my MPC this weekend, removing every PCB from the machine and inspecting. All seems ok, EXCEPT it looks as though someone has bypassed the SCSI f901 fuse with a small copper wire! I also found some grey build up on some pins of one of the ICs. I tried the card reader with termination power jumper disabled, and tried also termination Jumper off and the machine still seems to format the card / recognize the reader same ff10 error. I also have a couple other cards in transit.

First order is to replace the fuse on the PCB but also the discoloration around the IC on the copper does not look nice, it looks like small delamination of the PCB hopefully just some discolored soldermask

I know that finding a spare 3000's SCSI PCB is going to be tuff, so Im crossing my fingers that hopefully the discoloration is not an inidcation of a ruined SCSI PCB / IC (although maybe I could repalce the IC if I can source it.)

Im also going to replace the tact switches which from searching I have found the new p/n at Digi-key here (as the previous Mouser one is obsolete/discontinued) :

Can anyone advise if the resettable style "poly" f901 fuse is availble thru digikey, I am having trouble finding a part number for the newer style fuse.

Yes, that is the exact replacement for the SCSI fuse. There are two fuses packaged in each pack.

Just wondering how this worked out for u. I have a cf reader from JD as well. Great customer service, but I'm having trouble finding compatible cards. I'm also on so 3.11

I decided to return the drive before I got the scsi board in as $180 in limbo for over a month and opening my machine to be disappointed many times was enough. Once I get an external zip workin I may try again. Cant knock the service from JD. Just unfortunate I personally couldnt get mine working in a timely manner.

Have you gotten it working?
