250 ohm headphone amp

bit of a technical question here. i am looking at getting a pair of beyer dt770 pro headphones. they come in both 80 ohm and 250 ohm. from what i have been reading, it seems that the 80 ohm dont need an amplifier to reach good volume levels, but the 250 ohm ones do need an amp to run them. according to beyer's website, the 250 ohm headphones have a more rounded, balanced sound and claims to be more accurate for mixing. i will be plugging the headphones into my mackie 1402 vlz3 mixing desk, is this a suitable amplifier to run the 250 ohm headphones?

.....also, if i plug the headphones into an avid mbox headphone socket, will this be a sufficient amplifier? cheers

I got Beyer DT250s, they come in 250ohm & 80ohm too. I got the 250ohm variety and they work just fine on my Mackie 1402.

The only thing with the DT250s is that the replacement drivers for the 80ohm versions are much cheaper & easier to come by. I only found one place that would do the 250ohm drivers.

cool. any ideas how they would run straight off an mbox?

I don't think there should be any problem. I plugged my DT250s in to my iPod and could get an decent level. I don't know anything about MBox but they've been around for some time, and if anything was going to flag up then it should've done so by now.

Its not like 250ohm is a weird impedance, it does seem to be quite an established standard. I went for 250ohms for the reasons you mentioned and also thought that if the volume was set too loud by accident they would be less likely to blow.

Saying that I have had 2 drivers, so don't know if thats coz they were 250ohms or if it was fatigue - they are 10 years old now.
