it's not ideal, but it is clever.

no it's not perfect, but thats the breaks using vintage gear.

The buttons will be located under the SDCard slot.

silly question but,

will these usb devices work with the ASQ-10 as well? they should i mean... but just sayin, it would be silly to cop one and then not have it work! what do the manufacturers say?

and if on the sp1200 it boots up from the OS disk, could we not have a dedicated USB stick with the OS on it?

i also have an emax HD and that also works with booting from floppy but there is the emulation software for it that also allows you to save to your pc.. i realy dont mind sacrificing a fwe memory sticks to allow for the hardwares OS

im not sure you can know if this usb-device will work with an asq-10 until somebody tries it or knows something about the format. the usb devices have a lot of 'gotchas' and seem to be somewhat rigid in their software structure.

the hxc should work with an asq-10 - check the hxc forums and look for threads there.

with the hxc device at least, you can use an 'auto-load' image to boot the machine. when you turn it on, the os image is loaded, and the machine boots. you can then swap disk images normally.

im not sure if the usb-stick devices can auto-load like that...to me these usb solutions sound like more trouble than they are worth.

not trying to be a cheerleader for the hxc, but those dudes have really done an outstanding job. i think it is worth the extra $ for the improvements and support you get for it. these usb-devices appear to be mass-manufactured hacks while the hxc device is produced by a small team intent on making it the best option available.

still very happy they work for some people and i hope more users report back when it does/doesn't work.

It turns out that usb floppy emulator can auto-load any folder/floppy.

will any usb emulator work or does it have to be this one ?

Very unlikely.
You need one that's been made or adapted to work with your machinery.
Check the Hxc website.

It has to be 720kb compatible.
That one has identical characteristic like the one I am using with OS 3.10e.

I mounted it to my mpc 3000. Lights work when i turn on mpc but it doesnt read... I don't know what i gotta do...

When MPC is on drive's green lamp should turn off after 3 seconds and usb display should show "0.0."

1. Try to format usb stick on pc with software that came with the drive;
2. create folder "001" on usb with your pc - and place couple mpc sound files there;
3. Set "01" on the drive display;
4. connect the memory stick in the drive;
5. while loading, the drive should display "d0", wait for 10 seconds,
partition should be accessible now, display will show "01";
6. if not working, check if the cables are properly connected, & jumper settings;
When I was installing mine, wide cable from drive to mpc board was not inserted tight, I tried to unplug&plug in a couple of times and it worked.

Let me know how that went, I can make photo of my jumper settings, I think they are set to default.

You can also check if drive it self is 720kb compatible, install it in your computer and see if it loads saves from 720kb formatted USB memory stick.
Some emulators just support 1.44Mb format.

Some additional info:

With 720kb "FLOPPY TO USB CONVERTER SFRM72" drive comes CD with PC (FAT) formatting software application, and PDF manual with jumper settings pictures. Akai MPC 60 uses default jumper factory settings.

After formatting USB memory stick on PC with software application,
the floppy partition (FOLDER) you chose on the emulator drive (001-099) will be automatically created in seconds when you plug USB memory stick in the drive.
Each folder/partition will be 720kb. You can add long text in the extension of the folder via PC (Example:"001_tr707_tr808_tr909"), that way you can track your floppies easier in the PC.


The drive has just two buttons & two digit display.
When the drive is empty, the two buttons are used to change(scroll 0-9) wanted USB floppy partition of the USB stick (00 to 99).
When the USB memory stick is inserted, buttons are assigned to new functions.

By pressing drive's left button once - the drive display will show "d1" (it's like UNLOCKING WRITE PROTECTION on the floppy disk).
Then you can start saving your file/files to the USB partition via MPC 60 OS.
When the saving process in the MPC 60 is done, you have to press left button AGAIN "d2" will be displayed (it's like confirming saving process from buffer memory direct to USB partition), takes 1-6 seconds.
Now press the right button once - it represents "refresh/write protect" USB floppy partition.

"00" is root partition of the drive, I suggest you leave it EMPTY.
- Why?

Because USB floppy emulator was designed for old OS big industrial manufacturing machines, and a lot of them needs auto-loading from floppies.
USB floppy emulator have a internal buffer memory and it's capable to auto-load, without USB memory stick plugged in.
Each time when you turn the MPC 60 power on, USB emulator will by default go to USB root partition "00" & load files from there.
Without the USB memory stick plugged in, the drive will auto-load your last "floppy/partition session" from the buffer memory.
With USB plugged in on start up, if your root partition is EMPTY, the buffer memory will be also EMPTY and the start up it self will take just 3-4 seconds.
How ever, if you are willing to use it's root partition, on the MPC start up you can simple skip auto-load process by pressing/holding "cancel" Soft Key 4.

It doesn't change number without memory stick. May be problem in connecting and jumpers. I will make photo of settings soon. Thank you man!

I am really interested in this floppy to usb emulator... but I can't seem to find the product on the site? Are they still selling it? Or do I need to buy them from somewhere else?
