some questions about the tactile switches

greetings

have two questions regarding the tactile switches on the mpc1000 BK model:

1) Do the switches die abruptly, or is it a slow process?

- Today I turned on the mpc and the left cursor button was barely working, I had to press it very hard, although yesterday it was working just fine.


2) Does the mpc use different switches? The ones for the F1-F6 buttons feel much nicer than the cursor ones, and you don't have to press them as hard.

They are all the same but the stop, play, record are bigger

The switches have a covexed disk of flexible metal inside them
If pressed to hard, or over time the metal can crack or loose it's flex ability

Very easy to repair as its just 4 small solder points

THESE SWITCHES CAN BE FOUND IN ALMOST ANY ELECTRICAL DEVICE WITH BUTTONS ON (DVD player, cd player, radio alarm)

So no need to buy

If you have to press your buttons hard, chances are its a button you use more and it's prob due a change soon

The switches, when they go, can be fine one day, a pain in the arse the next, then working fine again for a bit, then totally **** up. But these tact switches are infamous on this site, practically everyone has a problem with them at some time.

It seems a shame that such a good machine can be brought down by saving just a few cents/pence on these nasty little tact switches. But that's competitive tendering I suppose.

ye, that's what's happening here, today the switches were working ok for a while then again were almost dead, that was confusing.

My MPC1000BK is about 6 months old, bought new and I have not used it very much, so I was surprised.

It was about the same for me too on my 2500. One of the Bank buttons was a little patchy straight out the box. But after 3 of 4 months quite a few began to get very iffy. That's not much time at all for something that isn't cheap. NAUGHTY AKAI . I think the contacts are oxidizing in the air, so it doesn't matter if you are using your MPC or not, it just happens.

Now though, with proper tact switches, the MPC is an absolute dream to use. I'm no longer frightened of pressing buttons too much just in case I wear them out.

I also have the BK model. about two years old, but even after just one year i was having problems with shotty tact switches. I picked up some new ones at an electronics surplus store, and while it was hard to get the pcb board out, installing the new switches was a breeze.

Anyone know what kinda switches are used for the rec/play/stop buttons?

Are they much more durable than the rest of the switches? I'm think of getting some of those too.

the ones they use are ALPS SKQEAD, but if you want a softer feel go for the SKQEAB..

they are more durable - dust proof and rated to 10 000 000 (i guess amount of presses before they wear down.. much more than the rest of the buttons used (500 000 or 1 000 000 depending on which type you are using). although obviously they dont fit in the other ones so cant be used anywhere else.

i have an order on the way where im gonna try using SKQJAAA010 in most of my other button locations.. they are also dust proof so hopefully wont deoxidize so quickly..they cost 3 times as much (as skhhaka010) but might be worth a shot. although on the other hand - given that they are sealed it means the deoxit wont be able to penetrate in there in the future and give them new life.

So there are 2 differences:

1) The casing is 8.4mm wide instead of 6mm. Would it still fit on the mpc circuit board? Is there enough space between the switches?

2) The distance between the legs is 6.35mm instead of 6.5mm.
