PLZ! Help me install my NEW harddrive

Well, a problem again.
I have bought myself a new harddrive after yesterdays big crash with my bad IBM Deskstar, that went totally dead (see old topic)

TODAY I bought a "WESTERN DIGITAL 1600, Enhanced IDE Hard Drive" I really hope this works with the MPC.
The Model NR is: WD1600BB-55FTA0
The dealer didnt have any Sea-Gates in stock so I took this Western Digital.

Well, now I wonder what you should do to get this runnin.
I installed it in my MPC as a MASTER and started it up, the scary thing was I heard those "click" noises again.
The noises advanced member "The-Shadow" wrote about:

I really hope this NEW harddrive not going to die soon.
Maybe it just do that first time you run it...
But the thing is my MPC couldnt find it.
It continued to say "NO DRIVE".
click....click....click.....click...."no drive"....

So what do I do?
I tried to put it into a PC, and same there, noises and No disk found....
How do I get it formated and ready to use?

PLZ HELP... emergency now...

If it is making to much noise return it now. It will drive you crazy later on.

well maybe there is somethin wrong with my MPC...

does anyone know if my new harddrive should work with the mpc... I read somethin about that the MPC cant handle more then 120 gb harddrives.... now I am really low.... is there any new compatibility list out from AKAI?

why does my new harddrive click, the same way as my old one did before it went dead...

I'm not sure, but maybe you should try a HD with a capacity less than or equal to 120 GB. I read somewhere that drives > 120 GB use an extended protocol that is not supported by the 4k. Could be true, not sure, again.

So maybe the clicking of the new HD is simply the result of something else, the fact that the mpc can't talk with it.

You may also want to check the auto-spin dip switch on your HD. Afaik, the 4k wants to drive to start spinning by itself. Maybe this feature is currently disabled on your drive.

I was told that the following HD actually works with the 4k:

Westerm Digital 120 GB/7200 RPM/8MB Cache/IDE-ATA100
Interface. Model # is: WD1200JBRTL.

I have that HD now waiting here for my shiny new 4k that has yet to arrive, so I can't tell you if it works on my machine as well, but I have good hopes.

Did you buy a new retail box drive or was it a refurbished drive?

Sometimes refurbished drives are on the way out too. I can't recall seeing WD1600 drives though, I would stick with WD1200s as those are coming pre-installed in some units.

If it's grinding already take it back and get a WD1200 series drive.

I have a WD 120 gig. DON'T ever buy a refurbished HD!! WD is good.
