Im sceptical of its ability to hold good sync when in slave mode but it seems thats being fixed. More so its a kind of all tempest in the mix or nothing. Imagine you have a track and you want to change the entire drum sounds I will bet anything the Tempest wouldnt be easy to blend in. yes, its a hunch I have to admit that but my hunches are rarely wrong  I just get the feeling with the Tempest that if you dont start a track with it then it will be a problem to fit in. Sure a hi hat and a clap here and there wont be a problem but using it for al the drums when you already have other parts going on..hmmmm

It all boils down to the knowing what you want in your track and the skill level involved in bringing the Tempest in and out of the mix. If you want a synth heavy sound it's there on a plate, but if you want a few subtle layers that's where the filters and other controls come into play.

I doubt it will be any harder to work into a mix than any other analogue synth, which admittedly can be tricky at times, especially if you have a lot of 'real' sounds going on. I'm getting one this year all being well. 8)

true Coz, but I do get the feeling the Tempest will force the user to work around its sound rather than the other way around. Im not talking about using one hand clap and a hi hat. I mean from the point of view of all the drums coming from the machine. With a sampler you are in charge of the sound. You can sound like anything you want with a sampler.

Then again, gear with its own unique sound is very desirable but its not if that particular sound cant play ball with other gears sound and of course your own sound. On the other hand if someone based their sound around the Tempest, and their music and talent is good they could end up with a pretty unique sound.

Its really not just a case of skill level. I found a brilliant combination of gear which worked amazingly well together purely by accident. But that experience taught me something very valuable.

But go for it. If you like the sound of the machine you gotta try it. I think ultimately Im just not that in to the sound of it. I like it, but not enough to buy one.

If people can get everything they want from the Tempest that's cool, but I know I will still layer other drums and samples. Youtube vids can be misleading because they show everything coming from the same box but in reality we rarely work that way.

In saying that there's a nice compilation video from Tempest users that has a few nice little grooves going on. It's way more than just a drum machine.

I doubt they knocked £500 off for a damaged box!

I don't mind paying full price for something that I know a thousand grubby paws haven't been ****' around with it.

Hey don't shoot the messenger haha.

There's good stuff in that B-stock. They reduce the price by 15% each month, so that's only a couple of months really. Unlikely, but you never know. Just something to keep your eye on mate that's all.

As a future Tempester I thought you'd be interested in prospective bargains.

I'm usually on the lookout for cheap records to sample from, but I have seen old keyboards and tape machines etc. I usually only rock up with 20 quid to spend, but I may withdraw an extra 20 this week in the vain hope that a cheap Tempest shows up!

Not really relevant for me - I'm talking about replacing my TR808 with a Tempest - I will still keep my MPC4000!

i think ill take the tempest instead of a dodgy numark controller :D

It has absolutely gotten worse with the 5000. I have one and got very similar results in my own testing. a 64 sample variance is significant when you are talking about trying to layer sounds and sync with DAW's and such. Because of that, I'm now a proud owner of a MPC4000 (again). As much as I loved the newer features of the 5000, at the end of day I'll trade all of that in for something that just works as it was intended to. I thought about holding on to the 5000 to see what if any updates akai may release, but I really don't think that will happen in the near future. I also think the issue could be much larger than just at the OS level and could potentially be in the processor itself. Anyways, my 4000 should be arriving in a few days so I've got to figure out how to get all my sounds/programs/sequences from the 5000 into the 4000. I remember how much fun akai.sys was....

I am not convinced about the so-called 64 sample variance several forum members have been talking about...especially the faulty tests they have been using to come up with their conclusions.

Perform the exact same tests on any MPC and on a DAW itself and you will find similar results.
