Sampling from VHS

What's up fellas.

Quick question. I've got a lot movies on VHS that I'd like to possibly use in some of my work, and was wondering what the best way of capturing the audio was.

I figured I'd just run the RCA outs from the VCR into my mixer, but no dice, there's all kinds of hum coming across the lines.

So what's the deal? Do I just cope with it and reap a shitty Signal:Noise or what?

DVDs I can deal with, as my 2800 has an optical in option installed and I can just run fiber from the DVD player to the sampler.

did you try patching the vcr into your mp using 1'4" rca jacks or adapters that's how i hook ish up to my mp to sample from

It is possible that you have the VCR and mixer plugged into 2 different outlets? Two outlets may have enough difference in ground between them to introduce a hum.

yeah vcrs always sucked for me . listen to j zones album crazy vhs samples all hissy and he put it out. dvd is to cd as vhs is to cassette tape think about it q u a l i t y

I have to agree with mpc3000 if you have the vcr in one outlet and your mixer in another you will definatly introduce 60 cycle hum or close. If they are in the same outlet see what else is plugged it to your setup that is on a different wall circute. I hate to say use cheap ground lifters that is a cheap quick fix that will intrduce problems later on. Also some may say to break off the 3rd pin in your power outlet strip but again a questionable quick fix that can come back to bite you in the butt. Try unplugging all unnecessary equiptment and plug all that will be used for this particular recording in to the same outlet. Get at us and post your results. BTW for the hiss issue a plug in call X noise by waves can help also Ray-gun can help. Any other frequency detected can be Notched out using a very narrow band EQ...

No.... but the ray gun is way cheaper and is capable of giving you good results if money is an issue. I was just giving out things I knew personally can get the job done, but waves products are expinsive so make sure you want to do more than just get out hiss, like total restoration. I should have made that clear. There tools can get deep.

is the power cord of your mixer or vcr tangled? that is enough to create grouond problems. I had a mixer that would shock me when touche it, until I untagled my power cords and it stopped doing it.

i do this a lot most of my samples are from movies, this is what i do,i record to my MD directly, take the audio out puts with a 1/8 in. plug=(rca one side 1/8in. other side) sounds pretty good you my get a little hiss but you can filter it out, this works for me you can listen to some samples that i have got from movies at my music page...

Get a better VCR! When i need to sample from video, i always go to my friends house. He has this VCR where you can press a button called "AUDIO", and all the hiss and noise is gone! Also the soundvolume drops a bit. I think it's some kind of hi-fi mode or something, and it makes a huge difference.

yeah this is a vcr for home theaters it's has stereo outputs they have four heads they have two for video and two for audio or something like that... my dad use to work on them years ago there a big thing now...
