60 MKI EMERGENCY!!

so i've had this 60 for about 2 weeks and i love it. i've wanted one for 2 years and the thing works flawlessly and i've been having a lot of fun making joints on it but just a minute ago i was chopping up some drums and out of nowhere while im trimming the knob starts to seize up, it scared the hell out of me cuz it felt like my mpc was having a fvckin stroke and the knob gets tighter and tighter and tighter and in all of 5 seconds its frozen. its absolutely stuck, i can turn it if i really force it and it actually works (everything else is working fine btw) but i feel im gonna break it if i do that. i guessed that something might have gotten wrapped around it and coiled it up like a bunch of hair or god knows what so i opened it up. this was my first time opening a 60 so i now know that the knob is fvcking INACCESSIBLE and i cant even eyeball what the problem really is. do i have to send it to Forat? help me for gods sake!!

i think the panel for that knob is screwed to the lid of the case.. no?

either way, I have the service manuals uploaded here:

it comes with the service manuals to most of the models but you can delete those and save the mpc60 one.. it should give you some info and it is a must for mpc60 owners either way.

aight lamp despite your attitude i figured i'd take another look inside. i didnt know the board attached to the face panel came off so easy so i took that off and now i see the knob looks totally normal inside. my guess is whatever that base piece the knob is inserted in is broken or something... i just emailed akai tech support so hopefully there'll be good news.

yo debauch thanks for that i'll give it a look when i get on my own computer for sure. btw a longg time ago i came across one of your beats "elicit aspect" i believe its called and the other day it popped in my head so i searched it and i was bumpin it in the car off the iphone AUX, that $hits raw yo, respect!

i'm still praying someone else has had this problem and could tell me what the deal is. searching and nothings coming up

No attitude man, I'm a tech, I rip shyt apart, figure it out and put it back together. That's what I would do. But yeah, you did exactly what you needed, looked at it, took further steps to find out what's what. Good.

also, I dont think akai will be much help with your issue... the akai you contacted is not the same company as the one who produced the mpc60 (it was bought out by numark a few years ago and has nothing to do with the original akai)

let me suggest something though, if you contact someone like forat, or vst service (google those names) and they will likely be able to help... who knows, maybe even akai will tell you to contact them as well unless they try selling you a new model instead hahaha... nah, but try forat though if you need to contact someone.

so i called Forat... first off those dudes kick ass cuz they gave so much help and fast and they stayed on the phone and worked it out. dig this: even this dude had NEVER heard of that happening. just my luck. but anyway it looks like its the encoder which is that base part that the shaft of the knob comes up out of. the knob sits on that shaft as i'm sure you guys know and it should be able to be pulled off but looks like homeboy glued it on. so i have to get it off somehow before i can do anything. btw $85 for a working encoder, not bad! i was getting scared cuz you know people in this biz extort the balls off you for parts that aren't made anymore.

i tried pushing it out from under with a screwdriver but that bltch is stuckkkkk on good. idk maybe some goof off or plain old brute force will be necessary. my dad is a computer technician of 30 years so i think he might be able to help a little

thanks for the input y'all btw. any ideas on how to get the knob off?

well I suggest trying to pull it.. maybe dab some rubbing alcohol into the base of the encoder where you think the glue is... it might melt the glue a bit.

if that doesn't work.. you can always take a small blade (box cutter or maybe a small pocket knife saw if you have one) and saw through the shaft that is glued in maybe? the problem though is if that is glued into the cap/knob part you are turning... you might need to get a replacement if that stick is stuck in the hole... or you could then try soaking the entire thing in paint thinner or something to desolve the glue...

i dont know i'm pretty sure it would say its compatible n you could use it in the 60 right there in the description. they look pretty similar but idk theres probably no way to find out sadly

They list the 60 and 3k parts in the same category.
Ever hear of a thing called email?
You could ask or just look them up in the service manuals.

Just go ahead a pay Forat too much and continue to perpetuate his rep if that suits your needs.
