Discuss the various methods you use in music production, from compressor settings to equipment type.

I would say yes we should use it like an MPC. Sample, Sample, Sample, and when you are not sampling you are adding sounds later on top of the MPC Audio, in PT or Logic. At least this is my vision of the system. I must be in the vast minority on this Sampling thing but it just makes sense to me. You CAN'T open those VST instruments in the REN software while the REN Software is running as a plug in in Logic. So if you plan on turning that VST midi into Audio, you must be trying to sample it, since as some one on this forum said, "Ren does not record Audio Tracks" (I'm taking their word on that, I have no idea) But if that is the case, I don't see an issue. When we use samples all of your sound comes out of the REN outs into a mixer or some other interface. And since you are not tracking audio through both the REN interface and non-REN interface at the same time you don't have a dual interface issue.

My initial post about this was somewhat agitated but it makes more sense to me now. Not really minding the "interface for the interface" thing anymore.

Understand that all of this routing chatter is only for those who want to use the REN analog outs. We could all track songs and export them digitally to audio tracks to later open up in Logic. This works just fine. However, we are all talking about this 3K sound thing, and how it requires the analog outs to produce it. That being the case. We now change our perspective from Midi Production Controller, back to Music Production Center and Midi Production Center. That means we are no longer looking at an audio interface we looking at the rear panel of an MPC. All be it gimped with only 2 outs, it is still workable. So you rout this guy like you would any other MPC with only two outs (the mpc 500,... damn even the 1000 has more outs than REN).

They have to screw us some where otherwise we won't have a reason to buy their next product. LOL.

For you Monsta, I presume your using an Apple Mac Aggregate system. Not everyone is using one of those. I have an Imac but I use PC for my music. I cannot use two sound cards simultaneously in a PC.

i dont why u cant use 2 soundcards on a pc ?? i think u can .. if not then the mpc has a sound card on it .. and u all ready have a sound card .. so if that was the case the mpc wont work with a pc .. u see what im sayin ??

I cannot, or anyone else tell my Daw to split various track to address different audio interfaces. This can only be done through aggregate which is Mac only feature. I can install multiple cards on my system and some will allow me to daisy chain them but then yoiu need the the exact same card, Motu allows this for example.

THe MPC will work either by bypassing its audio card completely, or I bypass mu current one. The MPC audio card should have been a option I think.

Its not the eend of the world though. As Long as I can somehow get midi clock to the Ren that will do me. When I want to work solely in the box that cool to.

Disclaimer. I still use Winxp. Perhaps Win 7 allows aggregate? I would have thought I would have heard that by now though.

I hope we are able to do this... I'd REALLY hate to give up the converters on the Apogee Duet2 for Numark ones...

100% agree! I know they have the "Studio Version" but it doesn't remotely compare to the feel of a MPC like the REN does... I would pay a few hundred more for a REN controller ONLY than Studio... Hope that make this happen.

Yeah, well this is why I still have a strong feeling that while on the drawing board the Ren was going to be a hybrid. Theres just to many clues in there to totally discount the idea

I believe the Ren in its current form is exactly what Akai planned from its inception. Its 98% of the vision I had and wrote about in these very forums when the MPC 5000 was released. The MPC Ren is pretty much an MPC 5000 without a CPU, memory, hardware, DVD rom drive or CF card drive.

Everything I have seen thus far makes sense. If you are going to sell a highend product, stability is a paramount concern. Creating custom audio and MIDI drivers to run your hardware is a way to achieve maximum stability. The sound of the MPC series has always been as important as its workflow. It would have been a mistake not to include 24 bit/96kHz analog & digital I/O as this is a key feature of the MPC 4000 and a bit of a disappointment that the MPC 5000 lacks this.

I am guessing that we are about 4-5 months away from getting this beast. I have been keeping my eyes on You Tube for an MPC Ren update during Musikmesse 2012.

Blue Haze wrote:If I were you guys (and I'm not trying to be mean) I would really be hitting my DAW really hard using your current hardware gear. I mean that basically many people that already work with computers can bump tracks using external instrument tracks at least (in logic ) or old school aux tracks to stereo file bounces. It seems and I mean it seems that only people moving over from strictly hardware hardware are having trouble wrapping their heads around it.

Really it would be the same as rewire we are using now with reason or ableton coming into our daws regardless if you routed into your mixer for external effects then back into your daws which many have been doing since the 80's.

So I understand using the MPC and rewiring to get the sound from reason in PT, but if you start making a beat in PT would you just call up the mpc studio via instrument track so you can use all the other rtas instruments? On the other hand using the MPC studio in standalone mode and then using komplete 8 instruments in standalone mode also would work also, and then you would have to "rewire" the track back into PT?? The easiest thing thing to do here in my opinion would be just to call the MP to a instrument track and use the software also, if possible

On the real it should be no differnt from maschine. Too many people are getting caught up in the 3k sound card hype. Which it seems to me like two pcs one for your daw and the other for your laptop with ren if you are using the RENs output. But since you can resample the RENs output if you use it as the computers soundcard that wouldn't be such a problem either.

The more familiar one is with their daw of choice and software emulation modules and drum machines the less worries!

I have a problem with most of the things you said here, It will be nothing like maschine because it does have its own soundcard, so that puts it in a whole other category when it comes to routing your sound. As far as getting caught up with the 3k sound thats not what this complaint is about, and why would anyone want to run 2 computers, no tht just dosen't solve this problem. As far as using the Rens outs as the computers soundcard that would be good, meaning you would have to use the inputs on the Ren as the main inputs for your DAW, and is that possible is the question. What this question was more or so really about was, if you want to use a outboard mixer, or if you have external gear such as keyboards synths, compressors, maximizers, etc. How are you supposed to route that, what if you wanna run it thru a compressor, ok cool you can do that, you can hook the up the outs of the Ren to your compressor, and then your compressor runs to the........ The basic question pertained to how are you gonna get the outside gear in the box.

Any virtual instrument be it maschine, or hardware hybrid like my virus, or my mpc 4k as an external instrument plugin in logic pro can act as a instrument track.

Instrument tracks are just midi input and audio outputs essential a combination of midi track and aux tracks into one channel.

Back in the late 80's and mid 90's the work arounds were to write the midi to a midi track send it to an external sound mOdule and route your audio from the modules to your aux to get the sound. The thing was you couldn't edit the audio or record it until you bounce down the whole track.

Technology has since then combine everything for us to make virtual instruments.

Ren will route three ways one by multi output plugin via USB, two by the external outputs to input audio tracks as a external hardware if you wish or three you could bounce the stems in Ren or studio and drag them into the DAWs Audio tracks the same as we can do with hardware of any type now.

So what is the big deal to wrap ones head around?

In most labs there are two kinds of setups hardware studios and software studios. I started with a hardware studio with a bunch of outboard gear changed direction after getting into logic as my main board and the center of my studio.

Every studio isn't and shouldn't be based on the instrument you are playing it should be based on your board the aka control center where you are going to combine all your sounds together into a piece of music.

You have to work with what you have. My mixer board is logic so it is easy for me as I track, mix, and arrange in the digital realm.

I have various methods on how I work depending on my choice of setup, but at first you have to decide what your main board will be as the center piece of your studio.

 it is your studio bud you have to determine how you are going to work not let the gear do it.

1) what will be your main mixing board?

2) what will be your main sequencer?

Shit isn't that hard to figure.
