haven't tried this yet, but i wanted to float the idea.

one difficulty for the 1000/2500 is finding a good replacement rotary encoder.
the rotary encoders are either loud or fragile.

jjos2xl allows you to use incoming MIDI to control every button.
you can wirelessly send OSC from an ipad or iphone to your computer, convert it to midi, and send it to your MPC in realtime.

touchOSC allows you to configure rotary/endless encoders:

The interface provides a number of different touch controls to send/receive messages:

Faders
Rotary controls
Encoder controls
Push buttons
Toggle buttons
XY pads
Multi-faders
Multi-push
Multi-toggles
Multi-xy
LEDs
Labels
Time & battery displays

Your idea is to hi tech for me :) but You just remind me I'm "waiting" for one since december.. (regards to Renato Rizoli).. and I almost used to not using it, due to having program and trim accesible from q-link and other things through lists and such..

too high tech for Bugfix???
actually it may be too high tech for me too, i haven't messed with osc yet and i don't have a smartphone other than this yet unclaimed disconnected iphone that i found on the street.

Can you assign the same encoder to DATA+/DATA- ?

good question. if you can't, then the rotary encoder option in touchOSC is useless. it'd be like a car steering wheel that only turns left.

one concern i have is whether it would be too "tactless" ie you wouldn't be sure your finger is on the right place on the touchscreen without having to look for it first.

I've been using touchosc with logic and it works beautifully. Haven't delved into templating but the editor looks easy to use and straightforward.

Would be cool to have a template for mpc! When doing a gig you could just connect the iphone/ipad via a camera connection kit (or dedicated 3rd party hw) and usb-midi interface. So no need to carry a laptop with you.

Finally after tons of searching and letdowns I found on vst site they have the replacement encoders for only 10.00 plus shipping. I just got mine in the mail the other day and although my encoder is still good as well as my buttons I thought it was smart to buy them in advance to prepare for the worst especially since when I bought my current mpc 1000 used initially the encoder seemed like it was busted because it was jittering values but deoxit fixed that but I find in the past deoxit is not always a permanent fix for mpcs. They still have them in stock last time I checked which was 2 days ago I believe. Hope I helped.

I also was thinking of building an ipad controller for the MPC to make use of the 'midi to button' option. Mainly to see if i could get away with never having to touch a tact switch again and as such never have to open up my MPC to solder (done 2 passes now - even with the better SKHHAKA010 switches they still wear down)

I used 'S1 Midi Trigger' app cos its cheap as a start. and built a couple of banks: the first covers all of the buttons that are on the front panel and navigation F switches, the second covers shorcuts to the menu's.

for the rotary encoder i also ran into this problem because midi trigger doesnt seem to support endless encoderage - my workaround was to make 2 large buttons at the centre for data +/-.. big enough to use 2 fingers on with fast double tapping to work data up and down. cos theres no physical buttons to press on a touch screen you can cycle through data pretty fast.

my next step is to build a nice frame/box so the ipad sits above the mpc and the virtual F switches align with the real ones.

This has helped me, thanks for pointing it out. :)

However $18 postage for an encoder is ridiculous IMO.... f*ck knows what i'll do.

coz, i just watched taht video. cool stuff.
amazing how fast this is all going and how quickly i got left behind. i can't wait to catch up/surpass all the goofballs i see derping around on their phones all day. will take the iphone to work and use a touchosc interface as a MIDI controller to enhance my musicmaking experience at work....

i figure a rotary encoder on a phone won't be a problem because i'll make it take up the whole screen...so as long as you touch it you are controlling it.

really can't wait. i hope creating layouts in touchosc isn't hard.
