Gary Burton was a staple in the Jazz scene of the 60's and 70's. Anyone with any diggin experience should have heard of him a long time ago. The ECM stuff is super easy to find and been sampled many times.
Good find though and keep diggin'!

funny thing is....last time I posted a topic like this I got no responses.
I guess nobody was up on the shit I found. Oh well.

I'm sure that was adressed to me so let me just say,i've only recently got into production so i don't know everything and every arist.Also i never had time when i was younger to keep my head buried in a crate lookin for vinyl.I was out graffin',breakin' and writin'.So my apologies for offendin' you for not knowin' everything you know.

I wasn't offended as much as I was just surprised to see someone who has never heard of Gary Burton in the Crate Diggers forum. Whats next Dizzy Gillispie? John Coltrane? Sorry if I came off wrong and offended anyone. It's cool that you were super busy being a B-boy when you were young. Too bad you didn't have time to dig back then cuz I feel sorry for anyone who is just now getting started. But it's never too late i suppose. By the way I don't expect anyone to know "everything" about an artist. But not knowing anything and never even heard of is surprising to me especially with todays resources. Pick up ANY jazz book and see Gary Burtons name. Check sample FAQ and see Gary Burton's name. Check Ebay and see Gary Burton's name. Check your existing Jazz collection and I bet you will see Gary Burtons name. Do you see what I'm saying?

What? So you saw something that mentioned Gary Burton in some context and then went out in search for his records? I need to have known about Gary Burton before finding one of his lps to come here and talking about him?
You read about him, and I found one of his records in a store, not knowing what I'd stumbled across at the time... That's how I discovered his music.

Nah I'm saying that however you found him is fine but it just surprised me to see "anyone ever heard of Gary Burton" in the crate diggers forum. I had the same response to someone a few weeks ago when they posted "anyone ever heard of the Meters"? These are both very popular artists and both have been sampled to death. Chances are if you find a record on a major label like Atlantic or ECM (subsidiary of polydor) for example lots of people will be up on that. You must remember that major labels press many many copies of MOST titles(but there are exceptions). So in the broad scheme of things Gary Burton is a common record although maybe not in your area. I think more than anythng it was just the way you put the subject. If you had said "I found this Gary Burton Record And...." I probably wouldn't even have noticed but it was the way it was written that caught me. Now if you had said "Anyone ever heard of The Topics?" I could understand that because they are a rare soul group from Fresno california and they only pressed like 200 copies or something on a private label. So who here is up on the Topics?

I hear you heavy.I wasn't startin no beef or anything.I just have so much music here i can't remember everyone.I have alot of Blue Note(love it)and i may or may not have Gary Burton the name just didn't sound familiar.And it may be kind of late for me to start diggin' but we all gotta start somewhere,sometime.

I was just saying that because stuff is so expensive these days compared to 10-15 years ago when I started. Also there are so many more people diggin' now than there was then. Also so many more resources available. When I started there was no ebay and barely any internet at all in fact. No sample FAQ or break beat books. I used to just go out and buy anything from the 60's-80's with a black guy on it. Now I'm so glad I did. I remember when me and my boy found 2 copies of 24karat black in the same record store for like $1 each. We didn't even know what it was and we didn't have portables back then. We just bought everything and anything and 90% was dope. The CTI stuff was everywhere and same with the Parliaments/Funkadelics, Ohio Players, etc,... Now I seldom see many of the CTI titles and when I do they are always $10+ unless at a swap meet or thrift. That's another thing is how WEAK the thrift stores are now in my town. The people giving shit away were raised in the 80's and the good shit is already gone. It's really hard to get lucky these days. I miss those times and wish I would have bought even more. Although I can't complain about an original Skullsnaps for $2.50 though. Hee Hee.

Hey man...can you PM me? I'm thinking we can help each other out on some trades. I might be in the Bay Jan or so for a week recording, and I was considering San Diego to swing by Certified. I could meet up. I was the same way. Buying shit for $1 on some guess shit...only to see it go for hundreds now...... but now the internet ruined it. You can find out what primo used or pete rock and have no idea about records. It's sad. You had to learn the ropes back in the day and now it's one coles notes cheat sheet. The internet is **** the game up with the bullshit. That's why everyone's beats sound the same...you don't need to use different records...why? You can download the same record Alchmist used.

Alot of Gary Burton's shit was really ill especially on the early stuff that came out on ECM. I wouldn't place him over Cal Tjader though. Cal Tjader has such a huge library, there is so much shit to sample from him. Roy Ayers is dope too but I feel like alot of his dope stuff has been exhausted. Its all about how you flip the sample of course...
