Digging for open Hats?

Open hi hats seem to be some of the hardest to find material, consequently I use very little in my work and I would like to use a lot more. They get tricky to melt with your closed hats and I don't like to use the same kits too often.

Is there any particular genre you guys find more hi hat material?
Do you also have trouble finding good solid open hits without the need to tweak much?

many tings can be made sound like an open hat.

i got 3 points to make that may help.

1. Dig. dig hard. latin music, soul, rock, all have open hats somewhere, find a good one and chop it out. If you got hiphop ish around surely theres an open hat in that. take it.

2. Timestretch is your bestie if you have a short open hat, stretch the ****. layer it with the same hihat your using but pitch it up a few, then stretch that. watch the algorithms dont screw the sound and make it tinny though.

3. record yo own son! slide some coins around in a cup or bowl, slide something on some metal, anything, get a rough openish sound and layer it.

i know your pain, i have two or three i use all the time, most of mine have come from breaks and usually have a kick behind them. bssshhhhh!

As for me, I recommend some Max Roach solo albums. After hearing him, you'll never look at a drum kit the same

drum machines are also a good option for having a nice variety of open hi-hats [as well as closed ones]... you can always mix those with a kick and snare from a drum break... as long as they gel together properly. just an idea.

if you don't wanna actually buy a drum machine, you can find free sample packs of all kinds of drum machines online for free. hope that idea helps...

i dig all nights of the week on youtube and the web for albums, go through them and i find some of the best sounds from the most sletp on artists ever.

99% of the time though, if i can find a vinyl of said artist with the particular break or loop, then i'll buy it instead of using the mp3 version.

the internet is there use it, it REALLY speeds up the process,,, unless you like to dig in crates instead

i prefer diggin, though, the internet is one way to find records to buy.

after you find the internet version just go dig for the original.
