Hi y'all,

I may buy a MPC 2500 but I'd like to know if it's possible to record a pad processed by an external effect using Direct recording.

Like I plug one or 2 outs to external effects then plug the outs of the effects to the ins of the MPC.

Would it work?

It's totally possible, but not with Direct Recording.

Back in the day, MPC users would resample by running a cable from output to input. Direct Recording just means you don't need that cable. So Direct Recording just samples whatever is at the Main Outs.

But you can still play the pads in Record mode, so if you've got cables hooked up to whatever effect and back, the sound from the pads will go through the Main Outs, through the FX unit, and arrive back at the Sample Ins.

I wish I could. :) I have a 2KXL and it ain't possible.

Direct Recording (if I understood correctly) isn't the mode that records the main out internaly but the mode where you can record while playing a sequence.

So, whatever, are you sure I can resample the outs of the 2500?

Although it would be better if I needed no special mode cause I could use the JJOS.

*Googles Direct Recording*

Yeah, you're right, I'm talking shit. Ignore that last post.

Recording a sequence with DR after it's gone through some effects? Yeah, totally possible.

Jesus Christ how did I not know I had this feature?

Great!

I'm just wondering, is it possible to disable the monitoring of the input?

Otherwise it would cause some strange sounds (2 seq playing with a lil delay), not really a problem but not really nice.

If anyone can test what I wanna do, it would be awesome!

Thanks!

Yeah it's right there in the Record window.

Click over to Monitor: ON, data wheel to OFF. Done.

Dunno if this will affect you but the monitor is only ever through the stereo outs. Your pads can obviously be routed to any output.

By the way, my setup goes through a mixer. The 8 outs go to their own channels, and the stereo outs go to a stereo channel. A stereo pair of Aux sends on the mixer go back to the Records Ins, so that anything routed through the mixer can be sent to the Record Ins. The mixer also has onboard FX (because it doesn't have inserts or aux returns) so I could easily send a pad to an FX and route the effected signal back to the record ins, for sampling or direct recording. Easy.

What's really cool is, the mixer is a PreSonus StudioLive 1602, which I bought for live work (I'm an engineer) and ended up not using, because **** taking a Mac to every gig. So all that stuff I just said also gets routed straight into Pro Tools. I love my setup 8)
